King Constantine I & Queen Sophie (nee Prussia)
« on: December 14, 2004, 03:57:06 PM »
Does anyone have any pictures of Queen Sophia (Empress Friedrich's daughter) when she was little or just married?
Thanks!
Angie  :D

What a wonderful picture of little Sophie, Princeeddy! Is that from the book by Eric Lowe? I had heard conflicting opinions about the book...is it any good?

Yes that is from Lowe's book. It was not as good as I think it could have been. There were lots of pics I had never seen and lots I had. There were many typos and mis spellings and stuff like that.

Wilhelm II exiled his sister from Prussia for a years for converting to the Orthodox religion. As she was marrying the heir to the Greek throne and would one day be queen wasn't she required to like Alexandra?

Of course she was required to do so.  Wilhelm knew that.  Wilhelm also liked to play power games with his siblings and never let them forget the power of his imperial might.  Thus the ban on Sophie, which caused much distress for the latter and for Vicky.

From what I have read, Sophie was not required to convert.  They actually had both Orthodox and Evangelical ceremonies. (Evangelical being the official name of the Prussian Church.)    Sophie's conversion came some time later, following the marriage.  The Kaiser and Kaiserin were mad precisely because the conversion wasn't required.  Like Ella, Sophie accepted Orthodoxy voluntarily and her mother, the Dowager Empress of Germany, completely understood and defended her decision.

When Prince William of Denmark was offered the throne of Greece during the 19th century, he was not required to convert either.  His children were born Orthodox because he later married Olga of Russia who was Orthodox already.

Yes, that caused quite the firestorm. Apparently Dona went into fits over it and after her last son was born Wilhelm said if the baby died it was 'soley Sophie's fault and she killed it' even though the birth occured after the scene.

Sophie sent a telegram to her mother re: the banishment (through the open post) that read that Wilhelm kept to what he said in Berlin, fixed it at 3 years, mad, never mind.

I think she eventually visited anyway and Wilhelm didn't do anything about it.

I don't think they were close but Sophie probably could've provided some advice to Alix.

That is a great picture.  Do we think that is a backdrop with the Acropolis painted on it behind Sophie?

Angie--this photo of Sophie is so incredible! Is it a cabinet photo, or a cdv? Do you mind me asking where you found it? Such a rare photograph!  :D

(shhh don't tell no one LOL) I work in a telemarketing type office and because of the holidays it is totally slow in there so I go on the web and surf (as long as it is not "dirty" material they don't object). But not only in English but in other languages. (When the boards can handle the Russian language I gotta post the list I use as keywords for  searches). I found this pic of Sophie while doing a search on the German Yahoo.
