Olga's Birthday?
« on: July 04, 2010, 02:00:53 PM »
When was Olga's birthday--November 3rd or november 15th? I'm kinda hoping it's the 3rd, because that would be a day before my birthday (but not the same year, of course!!) but I think it's the 15th. Please tell me what the REAL day is. I really don't understand this O.S. stuff from Wikipedia!
You are filled with anguish
For the suffering of others
And no one's grief
Has ever passed you by
You are relentless
Only towards yourself
Forever cold and pitiless
But only if you could look upon
Your Own sadness From a distance
Oh, how you would pity yourself
How sadly you would we

The year of 1895 belongs to the 19th century. In 19th century the difference between the two calendars was 12 days. Olga Nicholaievna was born on November 3rd 1895 at Alexander Palace at nine o'clock. In March of 1900, the difference between Old and New Style increased to 13 days. In 20th century and in 21th, we mark her birthday to be on November 16th.

However, this question and answer had been repeated for several times, but O.K.

Nothing wrong with being a newbie. You'll find answers to many basic questions in this thread:

I think there's a similar thread for each of the imperial children.

Every Orthodox Christian is named after a saint (their patron saint) and the name day is the day on the Orthodox calendar that the particular saint is commemorated.  Grand Duchess Olga was named after St. Olga.  She was the wife of the Duke of Kiev and was baptized during a visit to Constantinople.  She helped spread the Orthodox faith in Russia in the 10th Century.
