Yes, I have read some of them. We have his 2 volume biography of Alexander I, and the 2 volume letters of the Empress Elizabeth (Alex I's wife)....I've read them in French. They are amazingly detailed and accurate and well researched. to be fair, the subject itself can be a bit dry at times...Still, very well done, and beautifully published with leather bindings, large format, and beautiful engraved and color plates.

Has anyone read Jamie Cockfield's "White Crow" about Nicholas Mikhailovich?

How did you like it?

Hello Penny,
I own this book and begun to read it and found it highly informative, with never before published material and so on. However, since i do not like specially Nicholas M. i suppose i´m not the better source...The work done by Mr Cockfield is good but his style is too dry, nothing to do with descriptions, etc. I far prefer Massie(both Robert and Suzanne) or Greg´s style, that are charming(sorry but my english is too poor to express some opinions properly) and evocative as well as incredibly well researched and informative. Writting is not only a science but an art.

Antonio.

For what little it may be worth, I have just put up a short biography of Nicholas Michaelovich on the Alexander Palace site.

Extremely well done - very scholarly, which is not surprising considering the publisher (which specializes in scholarly works.)  Same publisher that did Kollander's bio on Frederick III and Quinlan's Playboy King ...

I agree with Marlene, that this this book is scholarly, aptly befitting the subject.

This G.D. was an accomplished historian, scientist and numismatist, isolated from the familial antics of SPb because of his intellect and liberal interpretation of politics.

Unfortunately this book currently commands a high price. I have recently seen it retailing for around $90 and increasing.

I have White Crow and am waiting for more copies of it...and I must agree that it was quite well done.
