Afraid another large picture- The Russian & Hesse families. Eleanor is in the 3rd row.

A miniature of Eleanore.

Seems VM has been erased from the family ! I have not found any of her yet. Btw, this is not just a museum catalogue. It is a wonderful "coffee table" book on the history of the House of Hesse. Most of the most interesting pictures are just too large for my scanner. I highly reccomend the book to anyone interested in the family. Superbly illustrated, Many Winterhalter pictures I had never seen before.

Hi Robert!
First of all, thanks for sharing all these superb pictures and portraits! May I ask what the name of the book is and where you got it?
Thanks, Anabel  Smiley

I ordered it from the Portland Art Museum website.  It is titled HESSE, A Princely German Collection. $60.

no wonder Victoria Melita has been erased from the family...she is still considered a "black sheep":(it's a great pity,she doesn't deserve that kind of treatment,she was so unhappy...

Well, I have not read all of the text yet, so she may be mentioned. She is in the genealogical chart- of course, she was the mother of little Princess Elizabeth. If I  have just not found a picture yet- I will be sure to post it if there is one.

Robert--you are a prince! I've wanted to get the catalog but was a bit leery of the price. After seeing some of what you've posted, I can tell it's a must-buy. I love portraits--so many of them are never reproduced in biographies and other books. Guess I know where some of my Christmas money is going.  Wink

I should have mentioned that there is a less costly paperback version as well. I prefer hardcover whenever possible, so please, anyone interested, check the Portland Art Museum website.
And, DGElla, thank you.

Marc, I will give it a try, but that page is particularly difficult to fit on the scanner, as there are a lot of pictures on it !

Ok, I tried again. I am no wiz at this stuff, and ended up with several glossy copies of the blasted page- but here goes. Probably way too large again

Once again, Robert--you are a prince! Thanks so much for the extra effort.

The portrait of Louis looks like it was based on one of his engagement photographs. The one of Irene is based on a photo.

GDElla, you are so generous with your efforts, , wish I had more knowledge as to how to post these things.
However, glad you like them. This is just one page  [Romanov connection] another 2 page spread is the "Windsor Connection"  {yes, I know it was Hannover/whatever}
