Wonderful work. Kaulbach could, for sure, catch people expression! I like all his works, but this one of Nicky's face is totally new for me.

About Serov's portrait:  I know from reading (and Aleksandr Pavlovich's post #447) that Nicholas' portrait
was destroyed in 1917, but that Serov had kept a version.  But is it possible that there are 2 that exist now?
The one in the Russki Musee looks less finished than some versions I have seen on the web (and like the
version in post #446. There is the version with Alexei's sketch, too. Does anyone know how many of
Serov's portrait exist now?  And where are they? It certainly is an amazing portrait -- to paint a Tsar like
that was pretty revolutionary, art-wise.

Also, I wonder if it was destroyed in part because it shows him as a simple man, not the hated man that
people had come to expect.
Thanks, Naslednik.

I saw a copy at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow in 2005.

Msg 454

The middle portrait (of Nicholas in the ball pelisse of His Majesty's Life Guard Hussars) is in the Alexander Palace, where I saw it. They also have the uniform!

Yes, Helen, perhaps I did see Serov's portrait (ca.1900) at Tretyakov, not at the Russian Museum. But I was surprised at how small it was, and the general appearance seemed unfinished -- preparing for the final oil version, I suppose.

Interesting, too that Lipgard's is at the Alexander Palace.  Someone must be keeping track of where all these portraits have ended up after the scattering in 1917.  If not, it would be a worthy task!

I am fascinated with how modern people, especially Russians, react to Nicholas (in his many interpretations).  His portraits are an eye into how people viewed him during his lifetime.  Some are propaganda (Lentulov's, though I love it), some look as if the artist didn't like him (Repin's several, in my opinion) and others like Serov's look into his private world -- which makes it a special painting.

Aloha all!

Wow, that last portrait of Nicholas II looks so much like George V - I guess it just underscores the fact that they were cousins and could look very much alike!

I think it is something about the way the artist gave him somewhat protuberant looking eyes....
