A poem for Anastasia

Did you know that the famous russian poet (or, at least, famous to me, 'cause i majored in russian language and literature...), while serving in the army during WWI and being treatened in the lazaret in Zarskoje Selo, met the Gds and wrote a poem to Anastasia in occasion of her birthday?

Here's the text:

Сегодня день Анастасии,
И мы хотим, чтоб через нас
Любовь и ласка всей России
К Вам благодарно донеслась.
Какая радость нам поздравить
Вас, лучший образ наших снов,
И подпись скромную поставить
Внизу приветственных стихов.
Забыв о том, что накануне
Мы были в яростных боях,
Мы праздник пятого июня
В своих отпразднуем сердцах.
И мы уносим к новой сече
Восторгом полные сердца,
Припоминая наши встречи
Средь царскосельского дворца.

I ve already trnslated it into italian, but it'll take me a while to trnslate it in english for you: hope you can wait, or, better, we all can wait a trnslation from someone else who knows russian, Saruska for example, 'cause i don't think my english version could be something good, not being english my mothertongue... i'm sorry, i juniored in translation, but only to italian...

Was this by Sergei Esenin? I have seen this poem on a Russian language website and translated it on Babelfish. At this point I'd hope for an 'angel' translator  . It would appear manageable for a Russian reader.

Well, I tried translating it on Google Translator, but the result doesn't make much sense!
Today is the day Anastasia
And we want to see us through
Love and kindness throughout Russia
To thank you came the.
What a joy to us to congratulate
You, the best way of our dreams,
And the signature of a modest supply
At the bottom of the welcome poems.
Forgetting that on the eve of
We were in a fierce battle,
We feast fifth of June
In their hearts celebrate.
And we carry a new section
Delight full of heart,
Remembering our meetings

kind of turns it in to free verse or Russian haiku ! 

I'm working on my italian - english trnslation of it, i'm so sorry, bu i know you won't understand the italian version! I'll post it as soon as possibile (the english one of course).

Was this by Sergei Esenin? I have seen this poem on a Russian language website and translated it on Babelfish. At this point I'd hope for an 'angel' translator  . It would appear manageable for a Russian reader.

I really don't know - on the site it was written it was Gumiljov; Esenin was quite young (the same age of olga's) and i didn't know wether he was ever injured... i really don't know who of them was

When World War I started, Gumilev hastened to Russia and enthusiastically joined a corps of elite cavalry. For his bravery he was invested with two St. George crosses (December 24, 1914 and January 5, 1915).

We all know that a soldier is invested with a cross when he's particulary brave: he saves his companions, frees a town, kills many enemies, etc., so most of time it involves being injured - it could be right the poem was written by him.

of course he's not as famous as esenin - as a poet - and nmor least as his own wife, Anna Achmatova, but i remember i loved his poems when i was studying to pass my russian literature exam 

My mistake; a faulty recollection. It was written by Gumilev.

Don't worry; it was a fun to me re - study those poets!

Here's what I hope is a slightly better translation of the poem by Nikolai Gumilev:

"To H.I.H. Anastasia Nicholaievnaevna for her birthday:

This day is that of Anastasia
And hereby we wish
That the hearts of all the Russians
Will fly out to give you joy.

We wish you the very best of times,
You, the seraph of our dreams,
With love we will sign our names
Under this collection of poems.

We think of nothing but this day
And forget all the plights of war.
The 5th of June always be gay,
A celebration of hearts we adore.

And when we shall fight again
The memory breeds strength within our breasts.
We see the parks of Tsarskoe
When we think of you on the battle fields."

That's beautiful! Maybe Anastasia was a clown and a prankster sometimes, but she certainly brightened up those operating rooms!! To think that somebody was so kind that, even though they had just gotton out of the midst of a battlefield, with blood all around and wounds to heal, he'd still write a poem to a bright, funny Grand Duchess who had meant so much to him in those dark days, with her impish - ness? That creates an amazing picture . . .
