Sometimes  more control is archived if a line is not crossed...  But also  touching some one was a much bigger deal back then...we are much more use to others touching us in the course of a day  than they , of any class.  It was more ritualistic.  There's so much difference between their time and ours in the way of social norms  , it's often hard to fathom .

I've finally found where i read about the search the very day of the arrival.
P. Kurth: Czar: the lost world of Nicholas and Alexandra.

In my italian translated edition it is on page 186. Being translated, i've not the real text, so i'm going to re -translate it into enlgish, so sorry my inaccurate translation:

"Nicholas described his family's last prision as "clean" but opposed himself, the very day of his arrival, to Bolshie's insistence to search their lagguage."

So i guess Kurth was talking about the hanbd lagguage. as Sarah was so kind to explain me.

Does Kurth give a source for this?  We have found that Mr. Kurth can sometimes put in things that have no proper source.

Just wondering.  I am not saying that I don't believe it, but it would be nice to know the source of the information beyond Kuth's book.

No problem, Alixz. I second you and i'm looking just for it now but... no way.
My edition has no footnotes, even not in the end of the book, so i really can't find them, if Mr. Kurth put them.

But i've found a letter from Maria to Anastasia, dated 1 may where she in fact writes: "They have searched our lagguage, even medicines and sweets!"

The original (in french) from "le tsarevitch - enfant martyre" by Eugenie of Greece, pag. 263

"Nous n'avons deballè nos affaires que vers le soir, parce que tous les bagages ont eté fouillés meme les rèmedes et les bonbons."

I believe this search is mentioned in NII and/or AF's diary. I can double-check later this week if no one beats me to it.

Like medicines, "sweets" was also a code word to signal that OTAA should hide their jewelry.

Fascinating they had two codes words for that...again with them and their codes within codes ( like AF heart code!) you have to wonder if it is  significant when both code words  were used  at once ....I have read of just the code word " medicines"  used in a way that was free of external event and so could be written  said at any time they wished . Certainly Alexi's health afforded  them endless opportunity to speak of " medicines" .  When the word medicines only was used, AF or Marie said arrange the medicines as discussed or something like that. But here Marie is talking about an event that happened to her...a description that would be read and could be checked. Interesting .  ...seems AF realized she had to  go with NII and was off in less than 24 hours...and get they had time to create this code. But it must of been on their minds for some time as they had  already smuggled their St Cathrine stars and such out of the Governor's house in Tobolsk . They were well versed in secrets  and codes

Just to confuse things further...

Alexandra's traveling pharmacy was also searched upon their arrival, so "medicines" could be used either figuratively or literally in this case.

Yep. In the lost world, same page, it says (stating it's a nicholas's letter but i don't have the text opf ti so can't quote) "(they searched) till the last bottle in Alix's pharmacy".

Not surprisingly...so how the word" medicines " was used would be important .Perhaps speaking of the guards searching means  literally  and when the words is used, but not connected to an event, it's  code

Quote
"(they searched) till the last bottle in Alix's pharmacy".

That would be quite a search! lol!  much greater than the one of the bon bons!
