Avdeev
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:03:40 AM »
It was a while since i started wondering: the first Commandant of Ipatev House was called Avdayev Or Aveyev? Since i had found both the nemes, i was unsure. I decided to make a research in russian to be sure, and i found something!
Thought it could be interesting for you all, so here it is.
Taken from here: http://feb-web.ru/feb/rosarc/ra8/ra8-436-.htm

№ 5. С. 197209) и Пролетарская революция (1930. № 9. С. 94127)

AVDEEV, Alexander Dmitrevich. (So they answered my question!) (1880 - 1947)
Member of the Uralskij Soviet. In march 1918 was sent to Tobolsk with B. Jakovlev to move Nicholas II, Alexandra Fedorovna and Maria Nikolaevna from Tobolsk to Ekaterinburg. He was the first Commandant of the House of special Purpose (on 4th july 1918 he was replaced by Jurovskij). Avdeev's memories were published on magazine "Krasnaja Nov'" (= Red Land) (1928, num. 5, pages 197 - 209) and "proletarskaja revolutzija ("proletarian Revolution") (1930, num 9, pages 94 - 127).

This is the first time i find something about HIM!
Hope you enjoed it.

There isn't a proper way. The Russian "e" can be transliterated, depending on the use, as both "ye" or "ey". "Avdeyev"/"Avdayev" is how the name is most often spelled. "Aveyev" is incorrect as the "d" sound is ignored.

You're right; but since i use european transliteration for cyrillic, which is slightly different from american one, all this methods are wrong. In european transl. we spell "Avdeev" or, at least, it sounds so using the transl. i have learnt in my Russian classes. Alas, as you said, there is not a unique method all over the world, so every spelling is possible. According to my method, "Avdajev" or "Avdaev" is incorrect, since in the original there is a double E and no A; but, as i already stated out, there is not one unique method, i was only trying to find which was the most correct for the method i use.
