Two new books on Amazon in 2012:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Enchantments-Kathryn-Harrison/dp/0007456069/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317553569&sr=1-2
About Rasputin's daughter (I think) looking after Alexei (Called Aloysha). Not my cup of tea, but could be good.

A friend just sent me this review from the NYT.

Seem to be a rather odd book. The author took a lot of liberties with the story, but then, it is a novel, right?

That does seem one of the wilder ones and that's saying something. I believe it's only in ebook format

Well, Amazon has it as both an ebook and hard back.

The reviews are interesting too!

I just got that in the mail and it looks good. I really don't know much about Michael . I always thought he just 'gave up" the throne,( usually nothing is said why he did so, so quickly) ... but looking this over that does not seem to be the case . Alexis  was acceptable to everyone since he was a boy and deemed no threat. But Michael  had proved himself during the war and would most likely prove to be a greater problem and so his ascending the throne faced much greater opposition within the Duma( because he was an adult Romanov )  and the Imperial family( because he was sympathetic to democracy ). Indeed his  belief in democracy had more to do with his manifesto than a wish to put off responsibilities it seems.  I'm glad to learn more about him .

This book is new to me but is by the same author as   as M&N. I am ordering it anyway, in case he might have come up with new information. BTW,  Michael was NOT the last tsar.  First, the title was abolished by Peter the Great in 1725 and secondly, he never accepted the throne,. One cannot abdicate  from what one does not have.

I just saw the Enchantments book today at work (I process books at the library). I don't think it's one I'll be checking out.

The Summer Palaces of the Romanovs: Treasures from Tsarskoye Selo [Hardcover]
Emmanuel Ducamp (Editor), Marc Walter (Photographer)

Specially commissioned photographs by Marc Walter and fascinating archive images capture
a bygone age of Romanov splendor that will captivate art lovers and historians alike

Situated just south of St. Petersburg, the Russian imperial residence of Tsarskoye Selo is now more than three hundred years old. Tsarskoye Selo (“Tsar’s Village”) was once a modest estate housing a summer residence for Catherine I, second wife of Peter the Great. The building now known as the Catherine Palace was extensively rebuilt by Empress Elizabeth and then lavishly refurbished by Catherine the Great. This empress's love of art and decoration is evident in the sumptuous interiors and in the extensive park, filled with fanciful pavilions, bridges, and monuments. Catherine also commissioned the neoclassical Alexander Palace for her favorite grandson, the future Alexander I; this later became home to the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family until their exile to Siberia. The palace is a glorious showcase for Russian art and craftsmanship in a huge variety of materials and techniques, from the mirrors and lavish gilding of the Great Hall to the blood-red beauty of the Agate Rooms, their walls lined with Siberian jasper. Tsarskoye Selo is not only a piece of art history but a living testimony to the tastes and private passions of the Romanov family. Their clothes and porcelain, their desks and bookshelves build an intimate and involving portrait of life in imperial Russia.

 340 illustrations, 289 in color
!!!!!!!!!

that last bit of emphasis is by me.

Sounds like it has elements of before and after photography,
which has been greatly needed since the recent renovations

Pricey indeed. It's because of the the photos and size I believe.  Today, when hard cover biography's with a photo section are 35.00...
a larger, "coffee table"  book of colour photos would be considerably more. This subject demands the larger format of course.

That is the Amazon price. The retail is $100 ! I guess standard for these sort of books now. They were never cheap to begin with.  As we all should know by now, publishing any book is expensive and risky..
