That reminds me of something I was going to ask. When Olga told her mother she was going to see if the book was right for her mother to read, was she joking, or being serious?

Joking, of course.  Alexandra did try to make sure her daughters never read anything, well, questionable...but Olga did, what with the incident with reading a bad word in French!

It is a crude term for faeces. Although as the Tsar said (I think it was the Tsar who made this comment), when the Soldier/General (?) who uttered it said this word, it was the noblest word in the French language.

Georgiy, I do believe it was Nikolai who said that.  Therefore, you're correct.

Olga was reading Les Miserables, and underlined the French army's response to the order to surrender at Waterloo.  This was, or course, "Merde!"  She wasn't to see Gilliard until the next day, so she asked her father what it meant.  Nicholas replied that it was a word that should never be repeated, but in the mouths of the French army that day it was the finest word ever uttered.

Nicholas met Gilliard in the garden the following day and asked him about the unusual vocabulary he was teaching his daughter.  Gilliard stammered for a response until Nicholas broke out laughing and said he understood completely.

Thanks guys. I don't know what the word  "Merde!" means, or why It would be offensive.. but it's a cute story none the less  :)

Merde does mean the s-word. :)
Olga used to take books off her mothers table of books and read them and when Alexandra asked her why she would sy "Mother I must find out if this book is right" or something like that :D

Olga used to take books intended for her mother and read them first, saying, "I must make sure this book is suitable for you to read, Mama."

I assume the girl sitting on the bench beside Aleksandra is Olga. But who's the other girl? Has anyone seen this one before? I haven't. It's been so long since I saw a new picture, and I just had to post it.

Actually, it's Tatiana on the bench, and the other girl is Olga. I think it helped that T was smiling. She has such a distinctive "smiling face" that one can almost always ID her, even when the picture is blurry.
