Why was Peterhof such a popular location for the formals? Did they just schedule the shoots for the time they were staying there?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'll try and give a possible explanation.

A common theme throughout the formal sessions taken in Peterhof are the light, airy summer dresses. Therefore we can assume that the family preferred to have their photos taken during the warmer time of the year, when they would go to Peterhof.

Same with Tsarskoe Selo? Did they just happen? (And of course why no Livadia?) (except for the maybe 1911 shoot)

Considering most of the formals at Tsarskoe are taken post-1913, the family was traveling much less (and were often about during the 300th year celebrations, if I assume correctly) and stayed in their home for the most part.

I don't think I could explain the 1906 or the 1910 shots.

I suspect this has been somewhat retouched, but here you go...

That image appeared on the front page of Zhurnal 'Niva' in 1896, if I recall correctly.  ;-). I think only Aleksandra - Olga cropped version. I have it somewhere in my database.

I am wondering about a picture of the Big Pair from around 1910. They are wearing funny flat hats and dark coats, and are sitting in some sort of garden with bushes and fountains. Where was this taken?
