Prince Waldemar & Princess Marie (nee Orleans)
« on: January 17, 2005, 07:47:28 PM »
Can anyone tell me about princess Marie, and her relationship with her danish family.
I know a little, and she seems like a fascinating woman.
How was she regarded by MF, Alexandra and the others.

It would altso be nice to know something about her french family. Did they live and France and what were they like?

If you do a search, on one of the threads we've put out some information on her--her fascination with firemen for example. She seems quite the character. It's late tonight, but I'll try to dig out some stuff tomorrow. She seems to have been a devoted Frenchwoman, close to her family. She constantly lobbied in Denmark on behalf of French interests and she had a bond with Alexandra and Dagmar in that she dislike Germany as well.

Thank you! Yes, i hadnt seen the Georg/Waldemar thread that had a lot of info...
But it would still be great to know more about her and the french family...
She seems like a woman who deserves a thread on her own!

I agree. I think that it was a great shame that her life was cut short as I imagine that her character would have become even more interesting (if that is possible) as she aged......Tattoos and firemen, such a fascinating lady......

I have read that she had an influence in making Christian IX appoint the first liberal goverment in Denmark in 1901. Prior to that the old king would only appoint conservative cabinets, eventhougt they at one time only had 8 seats out of 114 in the parlament.
A french magazine called him; Inventeur de l`art de gouverner avec la minorité.

The Orléans have always been a very talented family filled with explorers, painters, writers, sculpters...take one moment and look at the children of the late Count and Countess of Paris who are renowned photographers, painters, scultpters and writers!

James Pope-Hennessy's memoirs recount a fascinating visit he made to Prince Axel and Princess Margaretha and I highly recommend the reading of these for a great insight into the couple and a good laugh!

Yes quite an amazing photo...Queen Marie-Amelie of Portugal, also an Orléans princess, was pictured riding a bull.

Really, maybe it runs in the family!
How was Marie related to Queen Marie-Amalie? Was she the last queen of Portugal?

Queen Amelia of Portugal is one of my favorites (my usual refrain). She actually became a favorite when I saw her riding that bull in Last Courts of Europe. She was the sister of Helene, Duchess of Aosta (of Eddy & Helene fame).

Marie Denmark was cousin to Amelia--their father's were brothers.

Generation I
Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orléans assumed French throne as LOUIS PHILIPPE after his distant cousin, King Charles X, was ousted in 1830 (he sharing the fate 18 years later). Married: Maria Amelia of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (They took exile in England and were friendly with QV)

Generation II
1) Ferdinand Philippe Louis Charles Henri Rosolin, Duc d'Orléans m. Duchess Hélène Dss of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

Generation III
1) Louis Philippe Albert , Comte de Paris m. Infanta  Maria Isabella of Spain

Generation IV
1) Marie Amélie Louise Hélène  m. Carlos I of Portugal
2) Louis Philippe Robert Duc d'Orléans m. Archduchess Maria Dorothea of Austria
3i Hélène Louise Henriette m. Emanuele Savoy, Duke of Aosta m.2 (1936) Oddone Campini
4) Charles (d. 6 mos)
5) Isabelle m.Jean d'Orléans, Duc de Guise (cousin)
6) Jacques Marie Antoine Clément (d. less than 1 yr
7) Louise m.Carlo of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Infant of Spain
8) Ferdinand François Philippe Marie Laurent Duc de Montpensier m. Doña Maria Isabel González de Olañeta y Ibarreta Marquesa de Valdeterrazo

III generation, pt. 2
2) Robert , Duc de Chartres m.Françoise d'Orléans (cousin)

IV generation, pt 2
1) Marie Amélie Françoise Hélène  m. Valdemar of Denmark
2) Robert Louis Philippe Ferdinand François Marie
3) Henri Philippe Marie (d. age 34 in Saigon)
4) Marguerite Louise Marie Françoise m Marie Armand Patrice de Macmahon (was there Scottish blood there?) Duc de Magenta
5) Jean Pierre Clément Marie, Duc de Guise m. his cousin Isabelle Pss d'Orléans  (became head of Orleans family when his cousin the Duc d'Orleans died in 1926)

Oh it gets even better:

Marie (Valdemar) was the daughter of Robert, Duke de Chartres (1840-1910) and Princess Françoise d'Orléans (1844-1925).

Robert, Duke of Chartres, was the second son of Prince Ferdinand, Duke d'Orléans; while Françoise's father was none other than Prince François, Prince de Joinville, a younger brother of the Duke d'Orléans.

Hence, Marie was the daughter of first cousins, her two grandfathers being brothers.

Marie-Amélie (Queen of Portugal) was the eldest daughter of Prince Louis-Philippe, Count of Paris (1838-1894) and Infanta doña Isabel de Orléans (1848-1919).  Louis-Philippe and Isabel were also first cousins since after all Louis-Philippe was the eldest son of the Duke d'Orléans, while Isabel was the eldest daughter of Prince Antoine, Duke de Montpensier, who was the youngest brother of the Duke d'Orléans.

Amazingly enough the only surviving brother of Marie (Valdemar), Prince Jean, Duke de Guise, was married to a sister of Queen Marie-Amélie, Princess Isabelle d'Orléans!
