Prince Waldemar & Princess Marie (nee Orleans)

I can identify most of the Royals in this photo, but I can't pin-point a date or ocassion.  I make a guess at it being the engagement of Marie to Waldemar.  Is that Marie's mother in front next to Queen Louise?  Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, that's Marie's mother next to Queen Louise, and the date is 1885.

I do wonder if they get along. Queen Louise was so deaf by then...

God, she died young! Only 44! Such an exceptional woman... Which illness was? There are any reports of her husband and children reaction at this? Poor Margarethe, without mother at the age of 14...

She had been in ill-health for sometime, I believe. She died of influenza. The new book on her has more info but that's at home right now.  Waldemar and the sons were away in India when she died. She'd had some issues with addiction to morphine. In her later pictures, you can see the toll her ill-health was taking on her. There were also questions of her mental stability and she had been under the care of a doctor in the 1890s (?).

I might just get the book to know more, but I think the latest was more a picture book...

It was a photo book but each page of photos was accompanied by a page of text from diaries/letters so there was a good deal of first-hand information there. It's a wonderful book.
