A friend whose grandaaughter once worked for Sarah Ferguson said that at heart she was a nice kind girl, but unfortunately she had no sense whatever.

Two other royal consorts we can add to the mix:

Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell

2nd place for Leopold II of Belgium for genocide, but the Hesse-Darmstadt Hellfrau surely comes first for fuelling a Revolution that killed and impoverished tens of millions for half a century.

From The Last Tsar by Donald Crawford:

Quote
Proof of just how petty and vindictive Alexandra was being came only a few days later. Just before Michael had returned to the front, he and Natasha had gone to the studios of fashionable Boissonnas & Eggler and had a series of pictures together, as well as separately.... Boissonnas & Eggler decided to mount a window exhibition devoted to Michael and Natasha, using the pictures taken in February. He was a war hero; she was beautiful and increasingly celebrated - in combination the studio thought that would be good business for them....That portrait was precisely the kind that Alexandra was determined to destroy, which was why she was so enraged when told that the exhibition at Boissonnas & Eggler was drawing crowds. Her immediate response was to order Prince Obolensky, governor of the imperial palace, to have the exhibition closed down. On Friday morning, July 15, 1916, he arrived with the police, who then stood by to ensure that the studio cleared the window.'

Do you know Kalafrana - I believe that Sarah would have been a kind person too.

Of course, a lot of people loathe Wallis Simpson.

I don't, I thank the dead gods of Krypton she got Edward off the throne before World War II began.

Who knows, if Wallis and Edward had brought about a rapprochement with Hitler, WW2 might have turned out differently, as a war between the West (UK, France and Germany) against the Soviet Union?

A joint fight against Communism instead of a fight against all Slavs?

Yeah, and Hitler would have had carte blanche to wipe out the Jews, Gypsies, etc.

Yeah, and Hitler would have had carte blanche to wipe out the Jews, Gypsies, etc.

Well, he did it anyway. Perhaps he wouldn't have dared to, if British and French troops were fighting along with German ones.

And Stalin wiped out even more people, because the alliance with the western Allies against 'those evil Nazis' gave him carte blanche to outdo Hitler in genocide. (And apparantly the Russians still think this gives them the right to fight anyone they brand a fascist.)

We must not forget that Hitler was not particularly interested in a major war in the West (it would be very interesting to hear military historians' opinion about how 'necessary' war with France was in Hitler's scheme) and he hoped to keep Britain neutral. There never was a master plan to exterminate the Jews, it was simply something that developed as the war got more and more brutal and 'total' in the East.

Whereas Stalin had already before the war, in various genocidal campaigns, shown that he was far more brutal than Hitler.

Lol, Tim, for once it's funny to attack Stalin while you implicitly defend him!

Believe me, that was not my intent.  Stalin was one of the most brutal dictators to come down the pike (he makes Putin look like a teddy bear by comparison).

What it came down to was that we had two horrible dictators who were massacring people by the millions.  To destroy one, we had to team up with the other.

Had the Allies gone the other way and sided with Hitler to destroy Stalin, we would have still had Hitler when the dust cleared.  He might have temporarily cleaned up his act while we were fighting alongside him, but once the war was over, he would have gone right back to his old ways.

Either way, we'd still have an evil dictator in power.

Either way, we'd still have an evil dictator in power.

History would probably have showed (or rather, it has shown) that Hitler was the lesser evil. And just as important: That the German people were far more capable of throwing off his yoke than the Russians were regarding Stalin. Of course, in that vein, you can argue that it was no use ousting Stalin from power, because the Russians would not be able to come up with and maintain a better alternative.

I've never disliked Wallis. She married the man she loved and stuck by him. You could see how devastated she was at his funeral.

Mrs Simpson doesn't really come into this category, as we are looking for people no contemporary had a good word to say for.

Now, can anyone find any redeeming features for Pedro the Cruel of Castle?

Regarded by some in his own day (1350-69) as both a murdering tyrant and a coward in battle. He was murdered by his half-brother, Enrique of trastamara, who succeeded him on the throne.

And, going back to Russia, I've yet to read a single word in favour of the Empress Anna Ivanovna.
