« on: November 03, 2014, 01:11:43 PM »
Who in order do you think had the best marriage and why?

I would say:

1. Lenchen and Christian
2. Vicky and Fritz
3. Beatrice and Liko
4. Alice and Louis
5. Leopold and Helen
6. Arthur and Louischen
7. Bertie and Alix
8. Alfred and Marie
9. Louise and Lorne

5. Vicky and Fritz
6. Alice and Louis
7. Bertie and Alix
8. Louise and Lorne
9. Alfred and Marie

I'm changing the order a bit and providing some reasons why each couple received the rank they did.

1. Leopold and Helen – They were young and very happy together before his untimely demise. I’ve put these two at the top because of their young love and because they were able to have a somewhat normal life since Leopold was not in the military (away from home).

2. Beatrice and Henry – She was able to create her own happiness despite her mother. She fought darned hard for it too. She had a happy marriage to Henry.

3. Lenchen and Christian – I almost ranked this love match the same as Beatrice and Henry. Both couples were devoted to each other.

4. Vicky and Fritz – I would have put this union higher, but Vicky suffered greatly in the German court. They weren’t fond of her being English and liberal to say the least. Her eldest three children were raised without her influence; thus, they were essentially programmed to really dislike their mother and father especially their mother. Fritz and Vicky adored each other, but life was difficult for them because of their political views. It was an excellent marriage, that’s why I’m moving them up a rank.

5. Arthur and Louischen – They seemed to have a good marriage although he was away a lot of the time due to his military commitments.

6. Alice and Louis – She was looking for a soul mate in her husband, but after settling in Darmstadt discovered that although she loved her husband very much and he her, he wasn’t interested in the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment as much as she was. It broke her heart a bit. She died tragically young. Alice was an amazing woman.

7. Bertie and Alix – He wasn’t interested in being a husband to his wife. So sad. He disrespected her greatly by his actions.

8. Louise and Lorne – This seemed to be a marriage of convenience. I don’t know too much about their union.

9. Alfred and Marie – They led separate lives; he at sea and she raised the children making most of the decisions on how they were raised. It was not a happy marriage even though they had so many kids. Their children all seemed to have very tragic and/or unhappy lives as well. Sad. I think it would have been best for Marie to have married someone like Prince Christian (Lenchen’s husband) which would allow her to remain in her beloved Russia with her family. She hated England and the British Court. She was only happy to relocate to Coburg. And, for Alfred, he should have married Alexandra or someone like her. They seemed very well suited to one another. He was a very bright and dynamic child/young man who turned into a somewhat defeated man spending a lot of time under the influence of alcohol.

Helena and Christian's children all seem to have turned out rather well. They come across as a very united family.

Edward VII treated Alexandra very badly, but they seem to have remained fond of each other.
