I am trying to find any info on Colonel de Kotteritz of the Russian Imperial Guard. A year or two ago some people were kind enough on this forum to try to help me with this, but Col. de Koetteritz turned out to be very elusive. I have since found a couple more facts that may help, so I'm hoping that someone else may be able to turn up additional info or comments.

From what I can find, it appears that he was born "Bernhard von Koetteritz" on 21 Feb 1807.
He was baptized on 09 Mar 1807 at Brandenburg (Havel), Brandenburg, Preußen, Germany.
His parents are listed as "Von Koetteritz" and Juliane Montferin.

He had an older sister, Julie Caroline, who was born on 22 Dec 1804 and baptized at the same place as above on 22 Jan 1805.

The peerage lists Colonel de Koetteritz as the son of General de Koetteritz of Leipzig, Brandenburg, Germany.

Many thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this one!
Regards,
Sarah

Ernst Von Koetteritz,  served first as an officer in the Prussian army, but who took, after the great German defeat at Jena and the subsequent reduction of that army, Russian service, and died as Colonel of the Engineers in 1819, in Russia.  His wife was Julie Eleanor de Montferrin, whose father and mother died under the guillotine during the French Revolution. Their son was Bernard Otto Von Koetteritz, late Captain in the Royal Prussian Brigade of the Artillery of the Guard, and his wife was Emily Dorothea Hoepner.

His grandson Burt Hans Berhardt Von Koetteritz was born in 1853 in Prussia, and he emigrated to the US in 1879.  Their descendants live in New York State.

Wow! Thanks for all of that. I have found that Bernard Ernest Jule de Koetteritz married Emma Bruce (nee Ramsbottom) in 1849. She was a widow. Do you think that there is any relation with the below mentioned de Koetteritz family and the man that I am looking for?

Regards,
Sarah

The records are spotty.  I have found several references to de and von K. from the Tver region of Russia for several years, but can't tie them exactly together.  The likelihood is strong that they are somehow related.  Sorry I can't help more.

Thanks! I appreciate the help, and I have added all of this into my notes. If anyone can add to this (or has suggestions) I would very much appreciate it.

I was able to find a newspaper article about his wedding to Lady Emma Bruce in Italy in 1849:
Marriage in High Life. -- Florence, October 18. --- The nuptials of Lady Stewart Bruce, widow of Sir Stewart Bruce, Bart., of Dublin Castle, Downhill, county of Londonderry, and of Bernard Ernest Jule de Koetteritz, Colonel in the Imperial Guard (des Chasseurs) of his Majesty the Emperor of all the Russias, son of the late General de Koetteritz, of Leipsic, Saxony, were solemnized on Thursday, the 18th ult., at the villa of his Excellency Sir George Hamilton, in the presence of a numerous circle of their friends, who, after the ceremony, proceeded to the residence of the bride and bride-groom, where an elegant dejeuner a la fourchette was served to about thirty. The bride wore a dress of bleu celeste glacee, trimmed with flounces of the richest Brussels lace; bonnet and matelet of the same lace. Nothing could exceed the gaiety and hapiness of the party on the occasion.

This wife would die in Baden-Baden in 1885 and is listed as "Dame Emma Bruce de Koetteritz (Wife of Le Chevalier Colonel Bernard Ernest Jules de Koetteritz)". I think that he outlived her, as there is a small note about her will and estate mentioned in the papers, and this refers to money and property left to her husband for the rest of his life.

Again, thanks for helping!
Sarah

Hello, again! I'm working on this some more and trying to sort out this family in hopes of discovering more about Bernard de Koetteritz.

I think it's still promising for the birth record above, because it seems like there might be a little confusion between the children of General Bernard von Koetteritz and Juliane Eleonore Montferrin. They had another son, Otto Adolph Von Koettertiz. He married Clara Vogel in 1835, and I think that he will have married Emily Dorothea Hoepner as a second wife later.

Here is a marriage record for Otto and Clara. I'm hoping that someone may be able to translate this, as it may offer some more clues.

Thanks!

There's no mention of a Clara in this clip?

From what I think I can read (do you have the pic in higher resolution, or the original url?) it's about Otto Adolph von Koetteritz, lieutenant of the Royal (Prussian?) army in the artillery guards, son of (Jonas??) Ernst Julius von Koetteritz, Chief lieutenant in the Imperial Russian Army, and Juliane Eleonore Montflarin.
Age 35 years and 1 month

Sarah, It is a list of people (and their grave site registrations) buried at the Cimitero degli Allori, Cimitero Evangelico degli Allori  (English: The Evangelical Cemetery of Laurels), which is located in Florence, Italy.  The small cemetery was opened on 26 February 1860 when the non-Catholic communities of Florence could no longer bury their dead in the English Cemetery in Piazzale Donatello.   As he and his wife lived in Florence, it would make sense that he is buried there.  Hope that helps!  Kind regards, JGP

Thanks a lot! That is a great help. From his middle name being listed as "Julevich" (multiple spellings appearing on that, of course), I would guess his father must have been Jule. This is all getting me closer.

I have a photo of him, and he is wearing a couple medals (though he is not in a uniform). Does anyone recognize any of these?

It's been suggested to me that they may be French or Belgian, though one gentleman suggests that it could be the Order of St. Anne.

Thanks!
Sarah

Sarah,
It more likely infers (at least to me) that it is a matronymic based on his mother's name Juliana/Yuliana, as opposed to a patronymic. Kind regards, JGP

Some Lieutenant Colonel Julius von Kötteritz (from Saxony, died in Vilnius in 1819) from a database of foreigners in pre-Revolutionary Russia:

I think the name is Hans Otto Adolph von Koetteritz.  (Instead of Herr Otto Adolph v. Koetteritz.)
Father's name is probably Hans Ernst Julius von Koetteritz. His rank is Oberstleutnant, Lieutenant Colonel.

NB the name Hans is a short form of Johannes and can as such also be rendered as Johann (and Russified into Ivan).

I doubt Yulevich / Julevitch / Юльевич is a matronymic. Much more likely it's a patronymic from Julius (German) / Jules (French) / Юлий / Yuliy (Russian). Doesn't necessarily have to be from a biological father, but possibly from an (Orthodox) godfather.
