Before the Revolution (St P in Photos:1890-1914)
« on: January 21, 2005, 09:07:55 AM »
I want to share some information about this wonderful coffee table book since it doesn't look like it has been discussed here yet...

Basically, it is a collection of photographs, as the title suggests, of St Petersburg and its natives before the revolution. The photos are arranged in different categories such as history of the city, the arts, the daily life, etc... They are fascinating! I was surprised how many monuments and buildings did not survive the revolution... Does anyone else own this book?

I have it. I enjoy looking through it while reading about the city in other books, to get a "feel" of what the actual locations were like.

I purchased this book a few years ago. It's a splendid book detailing  Imperial St. Petersburg.

Apparently many of the photographs were reproduced from glass plates held in the St. Petersburg Central archives.

This book provides a fascinating contrast between the aristocracy and the peasant and the workers in the factories.

The late Dmitri Likhachov provides a powerful imagery of his early childhood of this great city. From his concluding  paragraph:

Time does not entirely stiffle our early impressions
[/i].

... and in the words of Pushkin:

Flaunt your beauty, City of Peter,
and stand unshakeable like Russia!
[/i]

A book I strongly recommend  ;D

Are there many pictures of the Romanov family?

Yes, some... But this book is mostly about Peter's city...

This book is not devoted to the I.F.  The Imperial Family were only a small component among the daily facets of life in SPb as this book so aptly depicts.

I am something of a buff when it comes to pre-revolutionary pictures of Piter. Last time in Russia, I managed to obtain a marvelous book, printed in 2003, on among others, the famous photographer Carl Bulla. "St Petersburg in Focus - photographers of the turn of the century". Lovely book with pictures from streetlife, military, Smolnyj, barges on Fontanka, working girls at a confectionary, action in a fashion atelier, doctors an patients, artists, people in the royal library, opera singers, firemen at work, pics of N&A...and on and on it goes. FABULOUS.
Get it!!!

I just got this book today.

Believe me, if you like pictures of the Romanovs and the city of St Petersburg as it was before the revolution, you want this one.

It is not hard to find, but it can be expensive.

I paid about $70 USD, but it is a treat for me and well worth it!

I am only half way through the pictures (I haven't even started on the text) and it has Nicholas II (alone) on the balcony declaring war in 1914.  A picture taken early on Bloody Sunday before the big crowds were there.
Stolypin's damaged dacha.
Phleve's smashed carriage after his assassination.
Anna Vyrubova
Rasputin
Churches and monasteries and government buildings and statues that no longer exist!
I could go on forever, but if you can afford it - go for it!

It sounds very interesting!...I'd like to buy this book, but I suppose that is very unlikely to find it here in Italy.  :(

I got it on line through Amazon Market Place - Miribillis books.

They had quite a few copies but they ranged in price from about $55 USD to $300 USD.

Thankfully I got a fairly good copy at the low end of the price list.

The value of this book will probably go up, and it sounds good.  I love to see old pictures like that.
