Shtandart or Standart?
« on: February 25, 2016, 05:08:02 PM »
Hi,
In British books the yacht is referred to as the 'Shtandart', but in American books it is spelt 'Standart'
Does anyone know why?
Thanks.

The British have it right. The "Sh" is the letter in Russian. The Americans like to Americanize foreign words (every country does it).

In Russian it's spelt Штандарт (the name of the yacht) or штандарт (standard, banner, regimental flag, ensign, which the yacht was named after), while "standard" as in "standard of living" is стандарт with simple -st.

Штанда́рт is pronounced [ʂtɐn'dart], roughly /shtenDART/, with stress on the last syllable, just like станда́рт. Listen to the pronunciation of Штандарт here.

It's a loanword borrowed into Russian in the Petrine era, from Dutch standaard [ʃtan'da:rt], roughly /shtanDAART/. Флаг [[fɫak]], flag, from Dutch vlag, is also a loanword, while the original Slavic words for these concepts are знамя [ˈznamjə] or хоругвь [xɐˈrugvʲ].

The most correct, scientific transcription of the name Штандарт is Štandart.

Берёзы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.

(Афанасий Фет: «Ивы и берёзы», 1843 / 1856)
