Like Nicholas II, Nicholas I was a devoted family man.  You could probably say that Nicholas I was a more "successful" emperor than Nicholas II, but he was probably also a bit more of a tyrant.  They didn't call him The Iron Tsar for nothing...

I read that Nicholas I, like NII, also didn't like to delegate paper work and insisted that he look over every document himself. He wasn't into the big picture overall and I believe made sure he knew exactly what was happening in every part of the empire. It was in reaction to the Decembrist revolt but I believe this way carried on by each future Tsar for the worse.

Both men seem to have very little imagination. NI was "successful" because he had the force of personality to pull it off. In a way Nicholas II was exactly like Nicholas I but without the iron hand to cover up the glaring problems and therefore failed.

All depends on your criteria. Certainly a strong case can be made for Nicholas I being the better and certainly more "successful" Tsar. But much of that probably had to do with circumstance.

Let's put it simply...could Nicholas II have been an adequate ruler if he were Tsar during the time of NI. Yes I believe so. On the other hand could Nicholas I have handled the rapidly changing world and catastrophic events that engulfed Nicholas II's reign? I seriously doubt it.
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right...

I See  very Good  points  , and the  height  prize  goes to  NI      although  Nicholas  II  Was  more  Faithful  to his wife.
