Albert (married to Marianne, he boxed her ears when she gave birth to a daughter. They later seperated)

This was a different Albert, he was the son of Charles/Karl. He had an uncle Albert who married the scandalous Marianne of the Netherlands.

Queen Luise would grow up in Darmstadt - at her grandmother's court. In the Lutheran Stadtkirche a memorial plaque (inaugurated by Crownprincess Cecilie) reminds of her confirmation there.
Schloss Braunshardt near Darmstadt - a summers retreat - has been completely renovated recently. Each year they celebrate the "Luisenfest" - starting tomorrow Smiley
It is a pretty little  house with wonderful rococo drawing-rooms. Fergie visited once when writing a book on Queen Victoria's travels

There was a pre-existing one so I merged the last message with that thread. Sadly, some photos are no longer present but perhaps this will re-ignite discussion and some new ones will appear.

This was a different Albert, he was the son of Charles/Karl. He had an uncle Albert who married the scandalous Marianne of the Netherlands.

It wasn't so much Marianne who was scandulous at the time, her husbands frolicking around with every dame in sight didn't amuse her,
she kept quiet for a while, then took her things and left him,way ahead of her time in those days...
It was only after that episode she became somewhat of an excentric, taken away by the gardener....many may have dreamed of a simular
situation then, but didn't have the guts she had.And still,I must say,she was a spoiled Lady, spoiled rotten by her daddy,King Willem I of The Netherlands.

The Schlossmuseum Darmstadt owns a number of gala gowns from the personal wardrobe of Queen Luise. Some of them are shown in the photo below. I hope that some will be displayed in Berlin this year - despite of the still uncertain fate of the Schlossmuseum (check out my facebook page)  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=359083919361&ref=mf

This is what Empress Elizaveta Alexeevna said about Queen Louise and her husband friedrich Wilhem during their visit to Russia

St.Petersburg 19.12.1808/10.01.1809 , a letter to Elizaveta`s mother Amelia of Baden

On Saturday morning our Prussian guests arrived. Thei arrival was really grand. The Emperor and the King rode horses. The Queen was in a carriage...the kin`s face seemed familiar because his portraits showed considerable resemblancy. one can`t help considering the queen to be a pretty woman. I was told that she was fat. In reality she is rather plump.
