James

We should bear in mind that Elizabeth of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha is the daughter of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, whose blood was very much Scottish and English.

I did, however, once try to work out the proportion of British blood in George V, and gave up when I got to fractions of 10,000.

OTMA were not "German". However, the German government considered them "Princesses of German Blood" in the treaty of Brest Litovsk as the grand daughters of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse-Darmstadt.

I don't see why people do not understand that. When people say that the treaty doesn't concern OTMA because they are not German, are obviously not reading it right. If the treaty said 'German Princesses' than it would only be Alix and Ella, but they said 'Princesses of German Blood'...because they have German blood.

I've been looking at 'German' too much that it doesn't look like a word anymore.

In a above reply someone commented that OTMA were German not Russian if so what does this make the children of:

Philip of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg and Elizabeth of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha?

It is indeed a good point that the (Holstein-Gottorp-)Romanovs are nominally German / Oldenburgers in the same way that Prince Charles agnatically is a member of the House of Oldenburg.

While it wouldn't be very wrong in any practical terms to call Prince Charles a Holsteiner by agnatic descent (his ancestors were Dukes of Schleswig and Holstein and claimed Holstein by cognatic descent from centuries of Counts of Holstein, after all), the term is usually reserved for the junior Gottorp branch, to which the Romanovs and the current Grand Ducal House of Oldenburg belong.

BTW all these nominal explications of Schleswig-Holsteinian designations reminds me of:
YouTube: America first, Schleswig-Holstein second
Koog = polder (land reclaimed from the sea with dykes) on the North Sea coast of S-H
Friedrichskoog (named after Frederik VII)
Kronprinzenkoog (named after Frederik VI)
Kaiser-Wilhelm-Koog
..... etc.
and Adolf-Hitler-Koog > Dieksanderkoog > Donald-Trump-Koog? (we can change it again if you put America first, Schleswig-Holstein second - it will be terrific!)
Or Beatrix-von-Storch-née-Herzogin-von-Oldenburg-Koog if we try to unite proto-fascism (AfD) and Oldenburgers?

Березы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.
