Victoria Series ( PBS/ITV)
« on: March 06, 2019, 12:27:25 AM »
I've seen here there isn't a discussion on the Masterpiece show Victoria. I would like to collect thoughts on it! My main issue regarding the Romanovs in it is the portrayal of Alexander II. He sexually harasses Queen Victoria. And then it is said he was going to marry a Danish princess. I know Helen Rappaport was historical advisor, though she recently revealed on twitter she was fired. I wondered her thoughts to on his mishap, if she happens to be around anymore.

My other issues with the portrayal of Alix's grandmother and the show in general:

*Queen Victoria as a white feminist queen
*Victoria as being the savior of the Irish
*Victoria as being in love with Lord Melbourne and making it the main love story of the show
*Lord Melbourne as a romantic hero (despite racisms and p*dophilia)
*Victoria and Albert as this bizarre rivalry love story instead of a loving partnership that had its storms
*Victoria supporting Charists
*Victoria as a good, devoted mother
*Why is it a faded grey color Gladiator-style
*That CGI of Buckingham Palace tho

Things I do like, though:
*Jenna Coleman does her best with the role, you can tell she's very passionate about it
*Jenna Coleman & Tom Hughes have magnificent chemistry, and are well committed to historical accuracy despite it's writer is not
*The costumes
*The Scottish Highlands storyline with Vicbert was incredible and heart wrenching

There is a book version of the novel, which includes Tsar Alexander. Even worse than the tv show.

I agree.

Of course, I know Jenna from her role as Clara Oswald on Doctor Who.

I can't watch that show, it is too far from reality.

Jenna is much too good looking for the role. Queen Vic had lost her looks as a young woman, she ate too much and got fat, was supremely selfish, and she was a control freak. She did love Albert but he was terrified of her tantrums. She got on with Lord Melbourne because he flattered her, not because she was in love with him. Her servants had a terrible time.
