I know this might not be much help, but I have seen  a color portrait of Thyra as a teenager (on a documentary), and she had the most beautiful gray-blue eyes. Her hair was a light brown. She was never seen as a beauty though, but anyone pales next to the beautiful Alexandra! Queen Victoria described her as having "a flat nose with the most horrible chin and mouth I've ever seen." She had what could only be described as a receding chin, and I think because her teeth were large, it gave her mouth an awkward look.

I recall seeing pictures of the three sisters together (when I first became interested in Royalty) and finding it hard to believe Thyra was the youngest, as she let her hair go gray when Alix and Dagmar continued to dye theirs (or wear hair pieces) up until their deaths.

Her mouth is what always threw me off about her looks--she did have lovely eyes. She strike one as the least vain (probable reason she didn't care about her hair) and that could be why she (IMO) aged the best. She didn't try to hide the signs of aging behind heavy makeup, etc....

yes it is a widow's cap. I don't know if Ernst had just died or if she put on widow's weeds for a long time.

Found an interesting passage about Thyra in 'Queen Alexandra' by W.R.H. Trowbridge

"The Princess," says one who knows her well, "was good, clever, and charming. She had the most beautiful, large, dark blue eyes with a wonderful expression of thruthfulness and goodness in them. A tragic bereavement turned her golden hair snow-white, but, when I saw her again after a lapse of some years, her eyes seemed to me more beautiful than ever. Queen Alexandra, once speaking to me of her sister and all the sorrow that had befallen her, said, 'Why should it? For she is the best woman I know; really quite angelic.' Her marriage to the Duke of Cumberland was a real love match, and afforded both families the greatest satisfaction."

Her hair turning "snow-white"...could this have been after the premature death of her son as child? If I remember correctly, she lost one to illness, and her eldest son in a car accident...

Notice she never "covered up" her hair, or tried to dye it, as I suspect her sisters did. Was this a way of mourning her loss before the world?  :(

Could be(like there is a sory that Reiner III of Monaco grew white ''by night'' after the death of his wife)! The infos are quite interesting considering she had illegitimate child...those ones who had them were a bit estanged from the rest of their families!

Rainier's hair was white before Grace died.

There was a story that Barbara Bush's hair turned white overnight after the death (from leukemia) of her toddler daughter. don't know if it's true or not.
