Families of Christian IX & Queen Louise

This uncle of Queen Alexandra appears on many group photographs. Queen Mary and King George went into mourning for him when he died.
The impression is given of a beloved uncle. Was this so?
As he was not married, did he live with King Christian and Queen Louise?

Uncle Hans, as the family called him, was prince Johann of Schhleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1825-1911).  He served as regent of Greece in 1867 when King George I went to Russia for his wedding to Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna.  In his memoirs, Prince Nicholas of Greece, has very fond memoires of Hans, whom he called, "a gentleman of the old school...charming!"

Thank you for replying. I had forgotten he had acted as Regent in Greece (it's a while since I read 'Kings of The Hellenes').

Prince Hans must have been venerated by the next generation too, as he appears on the christening photograph of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg's first child. I assume the baby was named Johan (Leopold) for him.

His brother, Prince Julius, is not mentioned as often. In fact he is listed as part of the bridegroom's family at the wedding of Princess Luise and Friedrich of Schaumburg-Lippe. Did Julius not live in Denmark?  

I have always liked Prins Hans, and the stories about him. He was the only sibling out of nine that survived Christian IX.
When he was regent in Greece he had to sign a death sentence, which caused him much grief. His family knew this and teased him by calling him, The bucher from Greece.

I have realised that he had another unmarried brother, Wilhelm, who lived into his seventies. In fact most of Christian's siblings reached a good age before they died.

Did they mainly remain in Gottorp when he became King, or move to Denmark?

I think the uncles spent quite some time in Denmark and they are to be seen in many group photos taken at Fredensborg or Bernstorff.  Prince Nicholas of Greece's memoirs mention them.

Prince Hans and Prince Wilhelm lived in Denmark after Christian became king. They are both buried at Roskilde Cathedral, the burial place of the royal family.
The rest, 3 sisters and 3 brothers lived in Germany.
The last brother, Nicolaus had already died in 1849, after drinking some liquid used to cleen the hoves on horses.

Prince Hans once said about the disease meningitis.
"Its a dreadfull disease. You either die from it, or go insane. I know what im talking about, cause I once had it".
When he met people he would ask them " how are you doing", but without waiting for an answer right after say, sounding very reliefed, "oh, thank god".

Does anybody have some info on her, or her husband, Friedrich of Anhalt-Dessau and their children? I know that Princess Adelheid married Grand Duke Adolph of Luxembourg.

Two pictures of Marie of Hesse-Cassel

I know very little about her except that she was the grandmother of Prince Friedrich of Schaumburg-Lippe, who married Princess Louise of Denmark in 1896.  Friedrich was the son of Marie's daughter Bathildis.  Unfortunately Marie died about 7 months before the wedding, but at least she knew that her grandson was going to marry her sister's granddaughter.

Except pics by the way, where do you find them?

Thank you Kevin, I didnt know that, and I allways wondered why Queen Louise knew the Schaumburg-Lippe family.
Off all the siblings of CIX and Louise, Marie is the one I know the least on. All I know is she was born and raised in Copenhagen, and that she passed her rights to the danish throne to Louise.
I got the pictures from The Royal Library.

I went to the Royal library in Copenhagen in April, and looked at all teh pics of Prinsesse Thyra (1853-1933), but time wise I could not look at any one else.

Are you allowed to purchase copies from the library - or view them online ?

I dont think you can buy them, but I'm not shure.

Marie of Hesse appears in James Pope-Hennessy's biography of Queen Mary as Mimi of Dessau, one of the many relatives that Princess Mary Adelaide kept bumping into on her visits to Germany.  She was the mother of Adelheid of Nassau, the exotically named Bathildis-Amalgonda (Tilla) and Hilda (who remained unmarried).  Mimi and her younger sister, Queen Louise, were nieces of the Duchess of Cambridge and regulars at the family gatherings at Rumpenheim.  When The Tecks arrived in Florence Mimi, Tilla and Hilda were already in residence, which cheered up Mary Adelaide in her first days of exile.  

I would like to know more about the Hesse-Kassels as they have several marital links to the Royal House of Denmark and are descended from George 11 of Great Britain (his daughter Princess Mary was grandmother to the Duchess of Cambridge).

If I remember correctly, Prince Albert objected to Queen Louise and her mother and sisters but I don't know why.
