NEW-The Intimate Life of the Last Tsarina
« on: February 28, 2005, 03:55:05 PM »
I have a book called the The Intimate Life of the Last Tsarina by Princess Catherine Radziwill
published in 1929 by Cassell and Co Ltd.

It is written in English and I wanted to know if anyone has read it and if so what they think of it plus if anyone knows anything about  Princess Catherine Radziwill's life at the court of the last Tsar?

Thank you

Many here will know much more than I, but I do know that that's a pseudonym, and that the author isn't terribly reliable.  However, I leave it to more authoritative minds than mine to say more.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Catherine Radziwill was not a nom de plume .. she did use the name "paul vassili" at times.  She was quite a character - and had intimate knowledge of the Prussian court, much to Kaiser Wilhelm II's distress.

A conniving *(^(*&^*&*%%^ she was and even got herself thrown in jail when she tried to blackmail Cecil Rhodes.

She also wrote Secrets of Dethroned Royalty (1920) which I found to be a trivial read. It focuses on Russia, Austria and Germany, being the 3 Houses which had not survived at the time of her writing.

I believe she also wrote a book about Rasputin, but I have never come across this one.

The only house she truly had knowledge of was Prussia because of her connection through the Radziwills.  But she certainly didn't endear to herself to anyone .  Much to my surprise, and amusement, her column appeared in the Washington Post. She was a strange bird.
Today she would be writing for the MIrror

Does anyone know what she looked like as all I've seen of her is a photo in Flight of the Romanovs where she is dancing/playing with Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich?

Ever since the time when I first came across Catherine Radziwell's scurrilous writing, then read more about her in James Michener's novel about South Africa, I've been intrigued. Her work I find unrealiable, but what a character she was . . . and from a safe distance of years, I am interested in knowing about her. All the same, I don't think knowing her personally or professionally would have been one of life's all-around great experiences!  ;)

I don't know very much at all about this, but am wondering if this Radziwell is in any way connected to the sister of Jacqueline Kennedy, who was once married to a "Stas" Radziwell. Does anyone know?
