I think Theo Aronson described her best as her main beauty lies in her blond hair and "peaches & cream" natural coloring. Her later good taste in clothes also helped her popularity. However she was not tall and had a short neck and legs and her laugh resembled "something from the stables".

Yes. I think that was the reason that she usually looking dignified in public and at most smiles serenely. Only within her intimate circle did she relaxed.

That, and...she was the Queen...she wasn't going to act anything *but* dignified. Of course she was criticised for it, with people calling her "cold".
