The Romanov Prophecy by Steve Barry

I was wondering, all these books talking about a restoration involve some really stupid stuff. Don't the authors of these books know that there were was a legitimate claimant to the throne in 1991 - Grand Duke Vladimir Kirilovich? And even further on, when some of these restoration type books were released in the 2000s - weren't they aware of Nicholas and Maria Romanov?

I wasn't impressed. I like my historical novels to work with the facts, i.e. use what really happened as the framework.

I do some reviewing for a historical novel magazine, and, by coincidence, the book I'm reviewing at the moment has Alexandra and the girls being taken away to Perm by the Bolsheviks after the Tsar, Dr Botkin and the three servants are shot in Ekaterinburg. If the book had been written 20 years ago I wouldn't quibble too much, but this one only came out in 2009!

Well, this book was publsihed in 2004, three years before the remains Alexei and Anastasia-or-Maria were discovered in 2007.  I guess the author was basing his premise on them escaping, since their remains weren't found with the others in 1991.

I tried the audio version and barely made it through 10 minutes. It's probably a fun ride, but I'm just too persnickety about historical accuracy to enjoy this type of story.

An infinitissimally small chance for doubt, especially in the case of Alexei!

It's fiction.

And any fiction based on some facts is generally more enjoyable if one knows less of the facts. So, I would not expect a Romanov buff to enjoy this as much as someone who likes "24", for example.

I went out and bought a copy of this book.  I liked it.  As I said, it was written before the last two remains were found, so there was still doubt.  Nice ending,  with the Romanovs being rightfully restored to the throne of Russia.

This book was written and understood to be a work of fiction. Not to be taken as any validation of any real issues. It is by the same author  of The Amber Room, also a work of fiction, with no pretence to  any claims, valid or otherwise.

I know it's fiction, but it's still my dream ending

I own a copy, and I enjoyed it a lot. Honestly, you have to be a fan of this type of book. It's a lot like Dan Brown's books. It's nearly all fiction with barely any truth, but it's an exciting ride.
