The 'L' in Olga is palatised. As has been stated it is very difficult to show in English how it is to be pronounced but it is like the L is followed by the 'Y' in 'Yes' - so a bit like Olyga, but that's not quite right either - you musn't make that into an extra syllable as in Oleega! My fiancee is Olga, and I think it is a most beautiful name (though I am prejudiced!), but she absolutely hates the way it is pronounced in English. The name itself means "Holy" - through Old Norse, and you can see that it is related to the English word holy.

People change over the years of their lives, and adults have things that are more important then the Romanovs to worry about at times.  Perhaps your parents are just preoccupied with other things, or acquired other interests.  To speak from personal experience, I went through a lot of so called phases in my life, and though I still enjoy things like Broadway musicals and classical literature, they are no longer my main focal points.

Ha, you and me both. I went around school muttering it under my breath trying to get it to sound right and people were staring at me!  Roll Eyes

Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we're gone and wonder who we were? How bravely we fought? How fiercely we loved?

I was hoping there'd be a topic about this Wink

Ever since my fascination with the Imperial Family began 9 years ago, when I was 12, I've decided that my first son is going to be named Alexei (and daughters Hermione and Keely, but that's another story Wink)

And when I find myself a man, and he proposes (*fingers crossed*) I'm not saying yes unless he agrees Wink

*lol*

In my country, it is the fashion to give children the most hideous, meaningless, disposable, mix-mom-and-dad's-names names, especially for girls. Angry

I don't know what I'd name my children, but they won't have any of my many names (2 first names, 6 middle names and 1 surname). One of their names might be Tatiana or Maria, but the name will most likely be their middle name.

ummm...

Well.. I like lots of Russian names, not neccesarily Romanov names: Galina, Natalia, Nadezhda, but the one I like the most TATIANA... and my husband also really likes the name, so if we ever have a girl... the name has been chosen.

The problem comes with boys names, I love Nicholas, but he says its the ugliest name ever  Cry   so... we'll see... lol
