I don't think that is ill mannered at all. To me that is a vindication that my word is not doubted as many people have. The plain fact (as you agreed) is that she never been to Portugal the place she was queen. period. I don't know any reason why she would have gone before given she was quite a German princess with a grandmother that seldom goes back to her home country.

You gave no evidence that she hadn't been to Portugal BEFORE her marriage--you even said 'She may have'.  Therefore there was nothing to doubt. You seemed to take it as a personal affront that I even questioned her ever being in Portugal. I had no idea whether or not Antonia, her grandmother, ever visited her home country to know whether or not it was frequent or seldom or never. Just because you 'don't  know any reason why' doesn't mean it was an invalid thing to ask. You say she was a German princess like she would never visit another country of her ancestry. If you're looking for 'vindication', go take it up with one of the many people that have tangled with you over your various statements--don't drag me into it when I'm looking for an answer myself.

He's wearing his Order of the Garter vestaments, isn't he? He was installed soon after his reign began, I believe. While in exile, he frequently (if not always, I don't know for sure) attended the ceremonies--usually at the forefront.

Congrats on that KF. It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? : )

I'm 99% sure that's his Order of the Garter. I've learned over the years of being on the Forum, however, that whenever I definitely say something is/isn't, that's when I turn out to be wrong!  Wink

Well...You can ask of course. I am absolutely sure that AV did not visit Portugal while she was Queen of Portugal or before. I am not sure though after her second marriage though.

I had already received an answer from SA, as I noted, and that satisfied my curiosity. It was just something that had occured to me to ask when thinking about it but I didn't have a burning curiosity or anything.

KF--I looked around and found that Manuel was named to the Garter in 1909. His late brother, Luis, had been named in 1902. Their father, Carlos, was named in QV's reign in 1895. I have a couple of photos of Manuel in the Garter processionals while in exile. I will see if I have any already scanned and saved.

He and AV were covered fairly frequently in the British magazines during their years in England.

Has anyone heard of this rumor:

His death has been regarded as suspicious by some because of the fact that he had been playing tennis on 1 July and was apparently in excellent health. An incident surrounding his sudden death was mentioned in the autobiography of Harold Brust, a member of Scotland Yard Special Branch in charge of protecting public figures. In his memoirs, Brust speaks of an incident which probably occurred in 1931 in which he mentions an intruder in the grounds of Fulwell Park who, when arrested, the Police confirmed as being a prominent member of Portuguese republican terrorist group the Carbonária and was subsequently deported to Lisbon. To date the identity of the intruder has not been confirmed. Questions remain as to the reason for the man's intrusion.

It is reasonable that the terrorist groups wanted to finish off the last surving member after gunning down the previous king and his eldest son. However there is absolutely no prove that an attempt has taken place or has succeeded. There did not seem to be foul play reported of the death of the young king.

Manuel and Augusta:

I actually think Augusta looks a lot like Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia in latter years in this picture.

Sadly I can´t see an affinity to her gandmother Mathilde Trani. Augusta is a complete Hohenzollern girl!
