how old was he in that picture? 10?. Nicolae had a a kind o "bob haircut" when he was like eight, Archduke Otto, son of Karl and Zita also had long hair and he wasnt a toddler. Im not telling that you said wasnt true, but he was a weird "fashionable" haircut for boys back in those days.

Well of course we realize that. I was suggesting and sveta agreeing that Manoel's was unusually long and kept so for a longer period of time than many boys. He dad long hair till at least the age of 9. He is

and, like ella noted, luiz's hair was cut very different.

Does anyone have a picture of her second spouse, Robert Douglas (1880-1955)?

Yes, it's probably him... I actually never saw a clear picture of him...  :-[

But it's good to finally know who's there. I've been wondering for a long time.  :)

If you go to the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen thread or the thread on Adelgunde (his 2nd wife) of Bavaria, there are some photos of him.

They really did! But I never knew why they didn't have any children... a friend of mine gave me his biography last Christmas but I still haven't got the time to read it carefully. I never even get to the part where they were married!  :D

No, she was 49-years-old when she married for the second time. I've got to try to find out the reason...

I remember reading that just after the wedding Augusta Victoria became ill. I don't know which illness but maybe was something that later unable her to have children???

Could be but I haven't seen any proof to confirm this. Some people are just sterile, like Ella & Moretta.

Sometimes the fault lies with the husband, not the wife. There are no illegitimate children (that I've heard of) to suggest that Serge, for instance, was able to father children. Moretta wasn't sterile, at least not at first. She conceived early on (perhaps even her honeymoon?) and miscarried. I don't believe she conceived again after that either because of bad luck or perhaps the miscarriage caused damage.

Well...She does not have children with two husbands. That could be something wrong with her...but again sheer speculation here. No doctor's report to confirm either.

I've been searching Manuel's biography to find why he and his wife never had children, but there's not much information about it. From what I've gathered, the main reason for it seems to be the fact that they both had a fragile health and eventually came to a point when they both agreed the children would not come. Manuel seems to have been distraught about the fact that he wouldn't be a father, since one of his biggest wishes was to produce an heir who wouldn't let the dynasty die.

In April 1922, they were positively sure they would remain childless as Manuel signed the "Pact of Paris" in which the succession rights passed on to the descendents of Manuel II of Portugal.

Since then, and quoting the book,

"In Fulwell Park, D. Manuel and D. Augusta Victoria led an increasingly quiet life, outside the fuss of society which had characterized the first years of their marriage. Manuel was everyday more dedicated to his collection of old Portuguese books and to his work as a lliterary history investigator."
