Ullstein bild's subtitle for this image was "Princess Augusta Victoria, Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern-Siegmaringen King of Portugal's fiance" since I'm no expert, I've let myself go... but thank you for correcting it!  Smiley

Unfortunately on-line photo-acrhives very often are not the best in identifying.Ullstein bild has many wonderful and rare images but not all of them are identified correctly. After all such sites just have a copyright, they are not the real Archives with experts.

Thank you for such great photos.

It would be great if one could continue through the next generation but I suppose they all "retired" from the limelight, became more bourgeoise and lost interest .

Fom the pic of Pss. Joséphine with her two daughters, I would say that the picture wrongly identified as Auguste-Victoria's is of Marie-Antoinette.

I wonder if, after all the stress of his late adolescence and short reign, with the murder of his father and brother, revolutions and contra-revolutions, his forced abandon of the throne and exile, he didn't feel much more relaxed and living a alife he would not change for the one he (briefly) had.

He did not encouraged very much the successive monarchic attempts to restore the monarchy and many of his followers either began to step away, realizing they were backing a lost cause and a man who was not that much interested in becoming king again, or rally with the miguelist line who was much more enthusiast for the reinstatement of the monarchy.

Opposite to the Bragança-Saxe-Cobourg line, who hardly moved a finger to support the monarchic invasions, the miguelist candidates, D.Miguel and D.Francisco José were in northern Spain and their aunts Infantas D.Maria Teresa and D.Aldegundes are known for having funded the monarchic armies.

According to what I've read on him (the article in Royalty Digest maybe?) he was very homesick for Portugal and was in never-ending negotiations about settlements, compensation, etc...I think apart from this, though, he wasn't completely discontented with his life. It was definitely easier and less dangerous, albeit sometimes rather aimless. He was a man of culture and erudition and seems to have established a good circle in which to move in England where he was certainly welcomed by the British royals and given every dignity. So it was rather bittersweet for him all in all. He at least was able to have his wish to be buried in Portugal granted after much negotiation.

I wonder if he knew the role his good "friend" George V and his mason friends and relatives had in the fall of the monarchy.

Not saying that he might have prevented it, but things might have been different if Edward VII hadn't died in early 1910...and have been succeeded by his dull and spineless son.

I would not say spineless, but more jittery and lack the will to push issues forward. Edward VII was the last monarch to formulate foreign policy with prior agreement with parliment. He played a personal role in forging an alliance with Republican France. With him at the helm, even Kaiser Bill had to trot carefully. Edward VII was also a close friend to Manuel and his family.
