Little over a week before the Big Day in Stockholm.

The Norwegian Court confirmed the attendance of the King,Queen,CPC and Martha Louise with Ari Behn.
The Dutch RF will have The Queen,her three sons and their wives and Princess Catharina-Amalia
who is a Godchild of Victoria and one of the bridal children,something she's looking forward too enormously.

It will be interesting to see how many of the foreign media will be too lazy to spell the soon-to-be-married couple's dukedom of Västergötland correctly. (And if the diacritically challenged ones will be able to dig up the archaïc Latinized translation: Westrogothia, instead.)

This coming week will see  marvellous and Royal affairs in Stockholm as the count down to The Royal Wedding steps up.

The festivities ofcourse have started already with receptions and such,but as of wednesday the wedding festivities really kick-off.

The Program:

Wednesday june 16th

Dinner at Skepsholmen for 170 guests,officials and government,the "Göteborg" will anchor there

Thursday june 17th

Guests flying at Stockholm at Stockholm Arlanda International

TM King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia host a lunch at Rosandal Gardens for relatives and friends

Private Dinner for 200 guests hosted by TM at the Palace for close and private friends of the Couple as well as the present
Heirs to the Thrones of Europe.

Friday june 18th

Guests will be taken by boat from either Drotningholm Palace or the City Hall to Stureplan where TM host a lunch.

From 14.30PM till 16.00PM< Grand Reception at City Hall,700 guests


From 18.30PM till 20.00PM Dinner at Eric Ericsson Hall,300 guests

Gala performance at 20.30PM at the Stockholm Concert Hall hosted by the Swedish Parliament,1600 guests.

I heard that the bishop (?) has problems with the fact, that Victoria want to go to the altar with her father. He is against it, because he don´t think it´s modern. Carl Gustav told him that he will bring the future Queen to the altar, not his daughter.

That's true,the bishop opposed to the fact Victoria wants her father to give her away as opposed to the "scandinavian custom" for the
bridal couple to walk to the altar together.Cosy ofcourse,but Victoria,the future Queen,chooses to be given away by her father,The King.
What the bishop thinks the Bishop should have kept to himself,one,two,it's not his wedding and he's not the Crown Princess.It is HER day
and SHE decides,and Daniel,anyone else is of no consequence,let alone some bishop....The Couple had a "conversation" with the old man
and now he's sailed aside so to say.Grumpy old man with verbal incontinence.

The grumpy old man is not just a mere bishop, he is the Archbishop of Uppsala. (Which perhaps gives the whole argument with the RF parodic shades of Thomas Becket!?)

It is a very trivial issue, but nevertheless interesting, as it is just as symbolic as the monarchy. There are several sides to the matter:
- The Archbishop is afraid this will set a precedent for many future Swedish brides who take the Royal Wedding as inspiration for their own.
- Should the Church only be treated as a "supplier of ceremonies" for secularized people who pick and choose whatever suits them?
- And as noted in the Swedish media: Often brides planning their church wedding have no relationship with the Church, and instead of basing their wishes on the contemporary theology and lithurgy of the Swedish Church, their wishes are drawn from Hollywood movies and based on the ritual of churches in English-speaking countries! (No-one is saying this applies to Victoria, but it's why the Archbishop wants to use this opportunity to take a stand.)
- Isn't the custom of the father leading the bride down the aisle a patriarchic feature evoking the words of Ibsen's Nora to her husband in "A Doll's House: "I went from my father's hands to yours"?
- Isn't a patriarchic feature like this inconsistent with both the gender-equal succession which makes Victoria the heir to the throne and the fact that one of the four officiating priests at the wedding will be a woman (the Bishop of Lund)?

It's a trivial issue and I fully understand Victoria's and the King's wish. It's purely symbolic, like the monarchy, and not meant to symbolize former times' patriarchic transfer of a woman from one legal guardian, her father, to a new one, her husband. Nowadays it's just a sentimental gesture. But I also see the Archbishop's point very well: Why not let our symbols and rites reflect modern realities?

It's a very interesting discussion as long as one doesn't get all dogmatic about something so trivial.

The centuries-old Swedish custom is for bride and groom to walk up to the altar together! However, this would strictly speaking demand Mr. Westling to walk one step behind HRH the Crown Princess and will thus have to be avoided! (Walking down the aisle from the altar is unproblematic, as he by then will have become HRH Prince Daniel.)

Coming to think of it, did morganatic brides in former times walk down the aisle from the altar one step behind their higher-ranking spouses???
