Does anyone know who was to succeed Prince Alexander if he didn't have any children? Did Bulgaria have a succession law that dealt with the issue?

As far as I can see the Tarnovo Constitution didn't make any further provisions than "direct male-line heirs" of Prince Alexander. A separate succession law was promised, but no such law was passed. Apart from the original Bulgarian and Russian, I only found a German translation: Verfassung des Fürstentums Bulgarien, unterzeichnet in Tarnowo am 16./28. April 1879. Chapter V deals with the succession.

Thank you for your reply, Rærik. I thought that was the case, but I just wondered whether his Battenberg family was mentioned as possible heirs. If so, it would in a way make the Battenbergs a reigning family, and so elevate them from their status as a morganatic family to an equal one.

Id like to inform you that there will be an Exhibition on Alexander von Battenberg at Schloss Heiligenberg on the 18. & 19. September 2010. For more information you can click on the following link:

http://www.honorarkonsul-bulgarien-hessen.de/

The Verkehrs,-und Verschönerungsverein Jugenheim will be the host. The main exhibition, which will be given to us from the Bulgarian Embassy is about Sandros years in Bulgaria. We, the VVJ will add material which emphasises on Sandros life before and after Bulgaria.
There will also be a little cultural program and a buffet.

Maybe there are some Bulgarian Forum members that live in Germany, you are welcome to visit.

Greetings from Germany
