Mette Marit wasn't married with the father of her 1st child. Her 1st marriage is with Prince Haakon.

Her 1st child is a boy called Marius, born in 1996.

I know this is off topic but there was a funny picture of Crown Princess Mette Marit, the Queen Sonja and, last but certainly not least according to imperial dignity. The Empress Michiko of Japan, in a haile storm!

How exactly do you pronounce this name?

Is it Met-a Mare-it
Met-a Mar-eet

Is there a long or short pause between the names?

Yes, quite an odd name, isn't it?

I think I read somewhere that it is a diminutive of Marguerite.

Possible? But is seems likely that she would then be called Crown Princess Marguerite?

Some info on her:

Mette-Marit is the youngest child of Sven Olav Bjarte Høiby and Marit Tjessem. She has two brothers and one sister: Espen, Per and Kristin.

The Crown Princess grew up in Kristiansand. When she was eleven years old her parents divorced, she stayed with her mother.

Mette-Marit studied at the Oderness Gymnasium, she also went to Australia for half a year to study, before finishing high school at kathedralschool in Kristiansand in 1994.

During the following years, Mette-Marit tried several studies and was frequently seen in the Oslo party scene, which involded drugs and alcohol.

On January 13th, 1997 she gave birth to Marius Borg Høiby, her son with Morton Borg, who has been convicted of assault and drugs dealing.

The birth of her son changed Mette-Marit's live. As a single mother, she brought up her son, worked as a waitress and enrolled at Oslo university again.

In 1999 she met Haakon at a concert in Kristiansand. After a year, the went living together. The couple got engaged on December 1st, 2000 and married on August 25th the next year.

It seems the birth of Marius changed her life for the better eh? Chances are if he hadn't been born, she wouldn't be in the position she is today...

The two e-s in Mette are short and pronounced approximately like e in "send". The a in Marit is long, pronounced somewhat like a in "father". The i in Marit is short and pronounced similar to i in "in". There is no audible pause between the names.

I've got a Scandanavian friend at work and she told me it's pronounced : Met-tay Mair-eet (but this must be said almost with a French roll of the r.) "Maaair'reet"

Although Norwegian uses more diphtongs than Swedish which is my first language (Norwegian and Swedish are closely related), the name Mette Marit (or Mette-Marit with a hyphen) is not pronounced with any diphtongs.

The pronounciation of the Norwegian "r" varies. In some dialects it resembles the French "r" and in some it's a trilled "r".

Mette is a Danish/Norwegian form of the German name Mechtild, and Marit is a Norwegian/Swedish form (one of several) of Margaret, which originally is Persian.
