I was surprised by this picture. I didn't think Aleksandra would ever show her ankles, since she didn't think it was proper. But there she is, showing her ankles. I just thought I'd share to see if anyone was as surprised as I was.

She's probably doing it just because she doesn't want to get her dress wet, and she was just among her own family, so it may not have mattered as much. I don't think she would have shown her ankles in public though.

Yes, Alexei Volkov was valet de chambre to the Empress.
He was born in 1859 to a peasant family. He first became a valet to Nicholas uncle Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, after serving in the Imp. Army and the Pavlovsky Guards Regiment. When the Grand Duke was exiled in 1902 because of his morganatic marriage to Olga Pistolkors (Princess Paley), Volkov attended the Emperor's household and finally became Alexandra's valet.
So it wouldn't surprise me he's the man wheeling Alix around.

What I mean is Alix behaved much more freely away from the Russian aristocracy, and generally people she didn't know very well. I think she came across as haughty and aloof to many people, when really she was just too nervous to be herself.
