Re: Empress Alexandra Photos #3
For me Alexandra did not look stunning in uniform. It seemed she felt comfortless in all those military decorations.

I don't know that holding one's dress up to avoid it getting wet and showing a bit of ankle was really that daring at the time this photo was taken.
The purital values of the Victorian era had well passed by this time and, while no one deliberately revealed their ankles and legs, it was no longer really considered the huge 'sin' that it had previously been. It was only a few years before women's skirt lengths shortened considerably anyway.

Re: Empress Alexandra Photos #3
Also, these photos were never meant for public comsumption.
These were private photos taken for private family photo albums.
I doubt she eve thought that anyone but her close family would see them.
As for sitting a horse, she would have been reviewing her troops just as Nicholas was doing sitting beside her. It was a necessary duty for whatever regiment she was Colonel in Chief of.
It seems to me that in her youth, she had a pony. At least a pony cart. Most young women of her rank would have learned to ride. Side saddle, of course.

Dear NAOTMAAFanx,
We have an old saying, 'better to have tried than not at all'.
The fact that you have challenged yourself to write in a language that is not your own, is indeed wonderful. Your english may not be the best now, but in time it will be. Give yourself credit, and be very proud of yourself! I think your doing very well. A belated welcome to you !

Re: Empress Alexandra Photos #3
The first photograph posted by Grand Duchess Ash is not Alix with "a friend". That is her cousin, Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig Holstein. Their mothers were sisters.
