Not much is known of Thyra's illegitimate daughter, is there? is there a photo of the child's father? I forget his name but I do know he killed himself shortly after it's birth and after having a very heated conversation with King Christian (not a very good mark for Christian I must say)....

I wonder if Thyra herself knew what became of her daughter....

Or was it arranged and hushed up by others, never to be spoken of again?

Thyra does bear a remarkable resemblance to her sister Minny, in some of the earlier photos, however her hair turned white so quickly, and she seems a bit stockier than Minny when she got older.

I read briefly the very lengthy thread "Olga of Hanover and Her Sisters" in the Windsor Forum, and it seems Thyra, unfortunately followed the all too common practice of "setting aside" a daughter as the mother's companion in old age.  That would be an interesting topic for a new thread...."Daughters Left Unmarried to Be Mother's Companion"

I'm going to steal that idea and make a new thread on the Windsor's wing!!!

Vilhelm Marcher in 1871.

And Thyra in 1871.

Did he borrow those pants from MC Hammer?  Grin

Sorry...I really shouldn't laugh. It's interesting to see the man Thyra was so in love with. How I wish it had worked out for them.

Great pictures Kmerov. Is there a bio on Thyra by any chance?

Her sons (from left) were Christian (who died 3 yrs after this photo), Ernst August (the youngest who married Victoria Louise of Germany) and George Wilhelm. It was GW's death in a car accident while returning from his uncle Frederick VIII's funeral that led to EA and VL meeting and marrying.

GW was 32 when he died--where there any romance rumors about him before his death? The family was wealthy and as his father's heir and with his mother's connections, I would've thought he'd be prime marriage material.

Since this photo is dated 1898, are they in mourning for Queen Louise I presume?

I've wondered the same thing, Grandduchessella.

Also, at the time, was it commonly known at the other European courts that Thyra had had an illegitimate child?

I don't think there is a bio on Thyra. The info I have on her comes from books on the entire family, or bios on family members...
About GW, I havn't read any rumors, and I was actually wondering aswell. There must be a story there!
And yes, they are in morning for Queen Louise.

I think that they did, or knew about the rumors. Ernst August did know when he married her.
Rumors about Thyras child had already reached Copenhagen a few years later. Many adopted girls born around christmas 1871 believed they were Thyras daughter.
One girl who is mentioned as Thyras daughter is Marie (called Kate) Jørgensen (1871-1964), who married Frode Pløyen-Holstein in 1902. But nothing has been proven yet.

There was an article in Royalty Digest a few years ago that said Georg Wilhelm wanted to marry Patsy of Connaught - they had met in Egypt in early 1905 - the same time Patsy's sister Margaret  met her future husband Gustaf adolf of Sweden.  Unfortunately I am at work and can't look up which issue of RD it was (don't tell my boss I am on here!!!).

Also the Austrian papers in early 1906 said there was a rumour that Georg Wilhelm wanted to marry Patsy's cousin Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, but her mother Marie issued a statement saying the rumours were false.

Sitting: Olga, Ernst August, Christian, Alexandra

Middle: Queen Marie of Hannover and her sister Grand Duchess Constantine

Standing: Princess Mary, Prince George Wilhelm, Princess Marie Louise, Thyra and Ernst August

I’m basically my guesses on the younger princesses on pictures of them when they were older but I could be wrong—Marie Louise was the eldest, followed by Alexandra then Olga and there’s only 5 years between oldest and youngest.
