I'd never seen the 3rd one of Ella that ZarevnaO posted. Is it from one of the Russian language books on Ella?

Slightly out of subject...I think one of the nicest, kindest and somewhat saddest impressions of Ella's face. How she looks at her namesake, baby Elisabeth of Hesse, daughter of Ducky!

The picture is well-known but..but..I always wonder what Ella thought about at that moment looking at the
baby Elisabeth?...

It is a rather wistful look, isn't it? It's always been my impression that, despite the general perception, Ella was Ernie's favorite sister. Add the fact that he named his first-born child after he, VMH wrote that she had been like a mother to him.

Do you have the complete picture of the one you posted, sveta? I've seen the other pose--where Ella's on the far right with VMH in front of her--but I'm not sure about this one. It might not be common to us poor souls who don't get all those great Russian books.  Cry

Here is the whole picture of the group with members of the Romanov family (during the Coronation festivities in Ilinskoe in 1896). The picture is very large and double-paged so I have to post the links to the 2 images...just put together a jig-saw!  Grin

Yes...but I doubt she would be tender. Remember the complaints of another young girl, Grand Duchess Marie Paulovna (the younger). She was Ella's ward but they failed to understand each other until much much later. Ella, though, did not have the same problem with Marie's brother Dimiri. I think Ella would like a son better.  Wink

Perhaps. I really think it's an aspect of Ella's character that hasn't been gone into. Perhaps the upcoming bio by Christopher Warwick will delve into it. Ella was certainly very close to her brother Ernie and was like a mother to him after Alice died. She also seems to have had good relations with Alice and Louise Battenberg though. It's just with Marie that trouble seems to have arisen.

Yes I guess it was bad chemistry. Greek Minny (Grand Duchess Marie Georgievna), Aunt of Marie said she was self-willed and spoiled. Another factor was both Alice and Louise Battenberg came with their mother on visits only, while Marie actually lived with Ella and Serge.

I think Ella's only problem with children was with Maria, which says more about Maria than it does about Ella. Marie of Edinburgh/Coburg described how Ella 'spoiled' her young cousin Sandra when she visited  Ilinskoe; and Marie of Roumania wrote of her adoration of Ella which never faded. Even Anna Vyrubova, who later seemed to dislike Ella, spoke of the joy she had as a child when Ella would entertain the children & hide gifts for them. I think Ella would have been just as happy with a daughter or a son....and the root of the problem was Maria's bitterness at having lost her father.
