By tragic I meant the death of Nicholas, her grandchildren and so many of her relatives. Loss of home , status, wealth and country. One cannot imagine what she must have felt in all of this.

From what I understand, Marie chose not to believe that Nicky and his family had been murdered, that they were all still alive somewhere in Russia.  The family just let her be.

Did she? I think she did and she did not. This is what she wrote in a letter to her sister, Queen Mother Alexandra of England, on 18 May 1924:

"Tomorrow is my beloved Nicky’s birthday, and how awful and sad that I no longer receive news from him, and do not even have any idea where he is! But I know that, wherever he might be, the Lord assists him. But how hard it is, how painful for me -- you no doubt understand me! There are things which cannot be broached or spoken, and so I hide them all away in the very depths of my soul."

Sorry for not giving the reference.

It was a letter from Maria Feodorovna to her sister Queen Alexandra, Amalienborg, 18 May 1924 (now in the Hoover Institution, Stanford. Maria Feоdorovna, Empress, Box 15, Folder 1).

Sounds like the poor woman never really wanted to give up hope, but in her heart, she must have known.

That was what exactly Olga told Ian Vorres in his book on her.
