Yes, this is a portrait of Marie Nicholaievna by Konstantin Makovsky. It doesn't look a lot like the real Marie though. ;-)

Although, that being said, none of us having seen the real maria in the flesh know her colouring etc. Most books say she was a blonde type, though not as fair as Olga - I suppose she was one of those blondes whose hair colour darkens as they grow older. It looks like she must have been quite fair as a young girl, and in a few photos you can indeed see that she must have had light hair as a young girl.

I agree with you, Georgiy. It can be seen on that photo posted by Alzbeta above.
It also happened with Olga. her hair became a bit darker when she grew older.

Makovsky was a good painter but not for portraits which should bear resemblances to the motiv:-) I wonder why just Maria was portraited and not her siblings. Do you know?
