Read "The Bear" online here: http://method.vtheatre.net/doc/bear.html

Potentially ridiculous question: Would Samuel French Inc. be likely to have the French (language) plays as well?

If they were translated, yes. If not, there is probably a French company that holds the rights.

In the post with the names of the characters that the IF and a few other people who accompanied them to Tobolsk played, I read one of the charecters in the first (i think) play was acted by a person named Prince Dorguky or something like that, it's not spelled right.
Who is he? The son of one of Alix's ladies-in-wating, perhaps? If anyone knows, I'd like to know.
Thanks!

Dolgoruky is the stepson of Count Benckendorff.

Prince Vassili Alexandrovich Dolgoruky, stepson of Count Benckendorff, was Marshal of the Imperial Court (I've also read somewhere that he was a boyhood friend of Nicholas's - they were the same age). Along with General Tatischev, he was thrown into jail on arriving in Ekaterinburg with Nicholas, Alexandra and Marie, and subsequently shot.

According to William Clarke in 'The Gold of the Romanovs', Dolgoruky was the 'Tobolsk end' of efforts by Benckendorff and others at Tsarskoye-Selo to keep a flow of money for essentials to the Imperial Family, and there are various letters surviving between him and his stepfather dealing with finance.

What great information, thank you everyone.  It's great to know what plays  they did. They put on a busy schedule!
How amazing would it be to see these productions...and really for a family to play in them!

Ohh. Thank you! I didn't realize how many people came with the IF to Tobolsk.

Sarushka , I should have figured you supplied the link  to the play and months ago too! But it's hilarious!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smirnov/ Nicholas: What? What did you say?

popova/ Olga: I said you are a bear, a monster!

Smirnov/ Nicholas : [Approaching her] May I ask what right you have to insult me?

popova/ Olga : And suppose I am insulting you? Do you think I'm afraid of you?

Smirnov/ Nicholas:  And do you think that just because you're a poetic creature
you can insult me with impunity? Eh? We'll fight it out! Pistols!

popova/ Olga:  Do you think I'm afraid of you just because you have large fists and a bull's throat? Eh? You Bourbon!

Smirnov/ Nicholas :We'll fight it out ! I'm not going to be insulted by anybody, and I don't care if you are a woman,
one of the "softer sex," indeed!

popova/ Olga:[Trying to interrupt him] Bear! Bear! Bear!

Smirnov/ Nicholas: It's about time we got rid of the prejudice that only men need pay for their insults.
Devil take it, if you want equality of rights you can have it. We're going to fight it out!

popova/ Olga : With pistols? Very well!

Smirnov/ Nicholas:  This very minute

Tobolsk Plays
« Reply #57 on: January 22, 2015, 08:03:48 AM »
What do we actually know about the plays that OTMA performed whilst in Tobolsk? Does anyone know which ones they were? The only info I can find about them in diaries and letters is that one was English and that Anastasia and Maria acted in male roles for some of them since their hair was short then. I remember seeing a photo of Anastasia outside the Governor's mansion in a boys outfit. You would think it was Alexei if you didn't read the caption! It's so funny! There's also that photo of Anastasia and Maria practicing/performing in costumes but I'm pretty sure that wasn't Tobolsk. They look too young. Anyway was just wondering if anyone had any more nuggets of information about them? Thanks!

One letter from Tobolsk to Anna Vyroubova: "Yesterday I acted with Tatiana and Gilik in a French play. We are now preparing another piece."  "Gilik" is Gilliard.

Haven't seen any photo from Tobolsk with Anastasia dressed as a boy. Where did you see that photo?
