At least one of the plays was a short one-act play  "Packing Up" by Henry P. Grattan from 1904. It was a broad comedy sketch which Alexei's tutor Charles S Gibbes would have known as an educated Englishman. The performance of this sketch was mentioned in Frances Welch's  book on Gibbes whose title escapes me (easily found out). The playlet as acted in Tobolsk is perhaps best known for the scene in which Anastasia's rump is accidentally exposed to the audience, resulting in great mirth all around. A semi-famous IF  anecdote, you might say.
I think there were at least three or four plays performed, generally on Sundays, including one by a Russian author (Gogol, Chekhov?) and at least one in French, directed by Gillard naturally .

I remember seeing a photo of Anastasia outside the Governor's mansion in a boys outfit. You would think it was Alexei if you didn't read the caption! It's so funny!

Do you mean this one? I was never able to identify the third person. I think that two of these are Alexei and Kolya Derevenko. Who is the third person, P. Gilliard maybe?

I think that we have once discussed their Tobolsk plays, I think that there is even a list of the plays.

EDIT :
There's also that photo of Anastasia and Maria practicing/performing in costumes but I'm pretty sure that wasn't Tobolsk. They look too young.

You must be thinking of this one:

Maria and Anastasia play. 1912.

Locked Tobolsk plays?
« Reply #65 on: January 25, 2015, 02:15:38 AM »
Why is the thread about Tobolsk plays locked?
Had a look at the purported photo of Anastasia in Tobolsk - if it is her, it looks much to young for it to be taken in Tobolsk. Would be interested to know what book this is from and the source of the photo itself.

It's not Anastasia. The caption in the book is incorrect. This was debated a number of years ago here, and we came to the conclusion that not only is the resemblance to Anastasia questionable, but the porch doesn't match any of the known photos of the governor's mansion at Tobolsk.

Uh, let's see: doesn't look at all like Anastasia , doesn't look like a girl at all, isn't Anastasia.
