From Livadia.org:

18 July 1903

To His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor, Sarov.

Dear darling Papa,

I kiss your hand.

Anastasia

Please, I doubt Anastasia wrote this letter at age 2, I suppose it was 1913. Please, my apologies if this had been discussed already, but had to ask. Anyone ? Or was it written by Olga Nicholaievna, maybe? Canonization of Seraphim at Sarov/Seraphim Sarovsky indeed happened during summer of 1903, but still I am confused.

It could have been written by someonelse, IMO. When I was younger, my mother used to tell me :"What do you want to write ?", I told her and she was writing it for me. Alix (or someone else) could have done the same thing for Anastasia. Still IMO, the little letter looks very childish, so it could be highly possible. Still, I could be wrong.

I thought it firstly, but still she was only 2 at that time. It seems impossible, or even unlikely.

Maybe, I don't know, but it's a possibility. The girls at Livadia would probably tell you. Smiley

Yes, that's how I help my brother sign his name and write things. And he's 2.  Smiley

Letter from Grand Duchess Anastasia to her grandmother, Maria Feodorovna (original letter in Russian) from the book Kejserinde Dagmar p. 472

November 10, 1913
Livadia, Crimea
Dear Grandmother!

I congratulate you on your birthday and wish you all the best in the future.
We are having such a good and gay time here. On the seventh we had a ball and I danced a whole lot and in the beginning I got dizzy but later it was better. We had very many things for the cotillion, and I also got a lot. There were many people: I think there were around forty couples. We threw flower wreaths made from the flowers that grow here and the gentlemen caught them, and we were to dance a waltz with them, and afterwards there were fire crackers made of flowers; we pulled the petals and behind were different kinds of things, and we went around to the gentlemen and read, and if his said the same thing that mine did, I was supposed to dance with him. It wss very gay. Maria and I, we go go quite often to Yalta and go into the shops and buy different things for the Christmas tree. I wish you all the best.

Your loving grandchild,
Anastaisa

I’ve searched for that letter in my compilation but I found only an excerpt of it so, Thank you very much for the full one! In my search, I found this one which is really Russian but got it translated by google translator.

Tobolsk 24 April/ 7 May 1918
V.K. Anastasia Nikolaevna to V.K. Maria Nikolaevna

We believe that the Lord will help. I don’t how to say what I want, but I hope you will understand. I wish you all the best and happiness, and we’ll constantly think and pray for you. Help us Lord. Christ be with you.

V.K is Velikaya Knyazina, which means Grand Duchess. I is interesting that letters were almost always transferred.

It's really not surprising they wrote notes to each other even when they were together.
Because if you wanted a private word, you would have to write it! They were surrounded
by others all the time, particularly at AP. If they had texting back then, they would be using it ! lol!

Ha! Now I finally understand what the "Velikye Knyaz" for some people's titles means.   Wink

Many thanks to everyone for contributing various letters of Anastasia's. It's interesting how much her personality shines through in each one. BlessOTMA, what you said makes sense. I'm not sure how often the girls exchanged notes between themselves in the AP before their captivity, but in Tobolsk, it certainly makes sense that if they wanted to say something without guards or the rest of the family hearing, they would pass it on in a note.

This letter was by Anastasia on May 7th, 1918, to Maria.

*"We played on the swing, that was when I roared with laughter, the fall was so wonderful! Indeed! I told the sisters about it so many times yesterday that they got quite fed up, but I could go on telling it masses of times ... What weather we've had! One could simply shout with joy."

It seems so wonderful, how she could have the same bubbly personality even when she was separated from her family and Alexei was still healing from his hemhorrage? It's so sad, that they had less than two months to live, but she was so happy, at least in this letter.

Can anybody find anymore of this letter? I don't know if there even is anymore, but it's so short, and Anastasia and Maria were so close, I'm convinced there had to be more.

Thanks!
Olga Bernice

24 April/7 May 1918
To Maria Nikolaievna. 6:00 PM May 7th, 1918 - Tobolsk

He is risen indeed!

My dear Mashka, darling. We were so terribly glad to receive news, we kept on sharing our impressions! Forgive me for writing so crookedly, I'm just being stupid. Alexei is so sweet when he tries to do his best to eat (remember when you were there on the bench). We take turns to have breakfast with him and make him eat, although there are days when he does so without prompting. I am always with you dears in my thoughts. It's so terribly sad and lonely, I just don't know what to do.

The Lord helps and will help.

We decorated the iconostasis terribly well for Easter, all in pine and flowers as is the custom here. We took our photograph, I hope it will come out. I continue to draw, they say rather well which is pleasing.

We played on the swing, that was when I roared with laughter, the fall was so wonderful! Indeed! I told the sisters about it so many times yesterday that they got quite fed up, but I could go on telling it masses of times, only there's no one left. In fact, I have loads of things to tell you. My Jim (the dog) has a cold and a cough, so he is staying at home and greeting everyone. What weather we've had! One could simply shout with joy.

Strangely enough I got more sunburnt than the others, like a real Arrrab [sic]! These last days I've been boring and ugly. It's cold and this morning we froze, although we did not of course return home.

I'm so sorry for forgetting to send You all, my dears, my congratulations for Easter, I kiss you not three, but masses of times. Everyone thanks you, darling, for the letters. We also had demonstrations, but feeble. At the moment we are sitting together as always, but you are missing from the room.

I'm sorry of course for such a clumsy letter, you will understand that my thoughts keep racing ahead and I can't write everything down, I just grasp at whatever enters my noodle. We are going for a walk soon, summer hasn't come and nothing is out, it's all very behind.

I want to see you so much it's depresing. I went out for a walk, but now I've come back, I'm sad and walking doesn't help. I played on the swing. The sun has come out but it's cold and my hand can barely write.

Christ be with you, my golden ones. I embrace you all and kiss you.
Anastasia.
