People Who DID NOT Believe AA= GD Anastasia, List
« on: July 26, 2005, 07:01:03 PM »
Just started a list about who believe AA was GD Anastasia before the DNA test, so, thought it only fair to start a list on Those who DID NOT believe Anna Anderson was GD Anastasia before the DNA tests.

I suppose at the top of the list should be GD Anastasia's uncle, GD Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, whom, I'm not sure ever came face to face with AA.  My memory may be failing me here.  So, someone correct me if I'm wrong on this point.

If you can, please list the name of the person, when they met AA and why they thought she was not Anastasia.

Thanks.

2. Olga Alexandrovna, sister of the Tsar, aunt of Anastasia

3. Prince Felix Yussupov, close family associate and husband of Irina Alexandrovna

4. Pierre Gilliard, the childrens' live in French tutor from 1904-1917

4. Sophie Buxhoevedon, lady in waiting to the Tsarina

Does anyone else find it interesting that Anna Vyrobova, Alexandra's closest confidant and close enough to the family to surely recognize Anastasia, was never questioned? Or what about Dmitri Pavlovich? He'd have known. Did AA and her supporters avoid them on purpose because they WOULD know?

-Irene , Anastasia's aunt and Alix's sister.

- Grand Duke Kyril Vladimirovitch.

-Louis Mountbatten.

I will add  other names tomorrow.

P.S: I was thinking about a matter that always keep me a little astonished: Why Annya Virubova was never consulted about AA identity? She was indeed close  to the Imperial Children. She would have been able to said if AA was AN or not. I know she was currently living in a Finland Orthodox Convent, but, perhaps she could have managed to travel to see "Miss Unknown". She was more able to voice her opinion in AA's case than Mathilde Kschessinska... ???

You are right. Grand-Duke Ernst of Hesse never saw AA face to face. However, he was the most fierce's Anna's ennemy...

I think we should also recall that Sophia Buxhoeveden was regarded with great suspicion from the Romanov's, such as Xenia & Olga who thought of her as a traitor for
giving the Bolsheviks the hiding places of the jewels that the IF carried with them into exile.

Her affadavit would carry little of no weight.

ALSO on Irene, shortly before her death, in regards to AA, she stated:  "She is similar, she is similar, but what does that mean if it is not she?"    Prince Henry had forbidden any discussion of the subject of Anna Anderson at Hemmelmark, due to the fact it upset Irene so greatly.

I am not sure with that statement if Irene was completely convinced either.

GD Olga believed at first, but then changed her mind after a couple of conversations with her sister and mother.............I wouldn't put her firmly in the "did not believe" group.

Let me repeat this because I was never an AA fan,  I don't have a great memory of what I read years and years and years ago or have seen within the last year on this forum and have gone to read the sources in the books I do have.

So,  please follow this simple request:

If you can, please list the name of the person, when they met AA and why they thought she was not Anastasia.

Thanks everyone for what you've given and please add more data to these names, please, please, pretty please with honey on it  ;D

The problem is that, most of people who didn't believes in AA...never meet her face to face.  :-/ Those who saw her and didn't believes her were quite few: GD Olga Alexandrovna (who at first believed her and called her "the little one"), Sophia Buxhoeveden, Pierre Gilliard, "aunt Irene", Sidney Gibbs (some people write his name as Charles Gibbes) , a girl named Darya, who was a GD Olga Nicolaievna's friend and lived near Seeon Castle and Prince Yussupov. I will check the list reading my whole AA stuff but I think there were few more people who denied her identity as AN and really meet her once in their lifes.

Xenia Alexandrovna and Kyrill never meet AA...And Nina Chavchavadze meet her and didn't believed she was Anastasia even if her sister Xenia Leeds did.

Some of those who did not accept her, and their quotes on the subject:

Prince Rostislav Romanov(grandson of Xenia Alexandrovna) when the DNA results were announced:  "I never had a shadow of a doubt. My father was raised with Anastasia, and this woman would never see him."

Earl Mountbatten: "I can assure you that there is not the remotest doubt that this woman is not my cousin. She was seen by all our closest mutual relations, all of whom declared there was no resemblance." He told this to the BBC, trying to discourage them from interviewing her and giving her any more attention, saying that her supporters  "simply wanted to get rich on the royalties of further books, magazine articles, plays, etc."

Sidney Gibbes: "She in no way resembles the true Grand Duchess Anastasia that I had known..I am quite satisfied that she is an imposter." Also: "If that's GD Anastasia, I'm a Chinaman."

Alexei Volkov: "The conduct of the people who surrounded Madame Tchiakovsky seemed to me very suspect. They intervened all the time, completed her inadequate answers, and excused all  her errors under the pretext she was 'ill.'"

Prince Felix Yussoupov: "I claim categorically that she is not Anastasia Nicolaievna, but just an adventuress, a hysteric and a frightful playactress. I simply cannot understand how anyone can be in doubt of this. These pretenders ought to be gathered up and sent to live in a house somewhere."

Princess Irene of Prussia: "I saw immediately that she could not be one of my nieces. Even though I had not seen them for nine years, the fundamental facial characteristics could not have altered to that degree, in particular the position of the eyes, the ear, etc. .. At first sight one could perhaps detect a resemblance to Grand Duchess Tatiana."

Olga Alexandrovna: "My beloved Anastasia was fifteen when I saw her for the last time in the summer of 1916. She would have been twenty four in 1925. I thought Mrs Anderson looked much older than that. Of course, one had to make allowances for a very long illness and the general poor condition of her health. All the same, my niece’s features could not possibly have altered out of all recognition. The nose, the mouth, the eyes were all different.”

You forgot Dmitri. Oh, and yourself. And me. And I at least met the woman, which is more than Gibbes, Mountbatten and Rostislav can say.

The testimonies I find most valuable are those who met both AA and the real Anastasia.
