Alexander III Letter
« on: June 20, 2004, 10:43:32 PM »
I have a letter written by the future Tsar Alexander III which is written in the hand of a secretary and signed by Alexander.  A rough translation is as follows:

Count Alexander Ivanovich.  In the past year, doctors found it necessary to take my children to the sea this summer, and when in March the place of residence was supposed to be selected on the Baltic Sea, I suggested Gapsal, as a place not only beneficial for health, but also the place, which left the most gratifying memories thanks to, of course, the time spent at dacha, which Countess de-la Gardi, who passed away, used to place at our disposal without fail.

Grand Duchess and I, as we found out about your willingness to offer us your home for the next summer as well, were anticipating the benefit and pleasure of staying there, but God wished to test us, what forces us to refuse your kind offer: it is impossible for Tsearevna to go to Gapsal alone; I, due to my military service, have to stay at camp; that is why we decided, that she and our son will set off for Denmark, where, as doctors assure, staying at the sea will be just as beneficial for the child; and the Grand Duchess will find consolation in her sorrow amongst her family.

Thus, we apologize to you and Countess for inconvenience, and ask you to kindly extend your hospitality, if next year our son has necessity to spend a summer in Gapsal.

Please convey to the Countess deepest regard from me and Tsesarevna.

           With sincere respect and gratitude,
                 Yours Alexander.

The 10th day of May, 1870
Tsarskoe Selo

I expect that the letter refers to the recent death of their infant child.  Does anyone know anything else about the contents of the letter such as the identity of the Count and Countess, the specific dacha, and etc.?

Thanks,

Scott

The count in this letter is General Count Alexander Ivanovich Brevern de la Gardie (1814-1890), whose family estate in Gapsal (now Haapsalu in Estonia) was sometimes used by the imperial family.

Gapsal was considered a sea resort; its attractiveness was enhanced by its close proximity to Petersburg and some European flair.

The deceased countess is probably the adressee's mother, Countess Maria de la Gardie.

Mike (or anyone else),

Do you have any additional biographical information on the Count and Countess?

What about the current condition of the dacha?

Scott,
If you read Russian, here's a pre-revolutionary dictionary article on Count Brevern de la Gardie.

Counts de la Gardie were feudal lords of Gapsal since 16th c. and owned many properties in the town, incl. the castle. I couldn't find which one was referred to in Alexander III's letter. Probably if you leave a note in the guestbook of Haapsalu municipal site, they'll give a better answer.

Mike,

Thanks for your help.  I have sent an email to the Haapsalu municipal site to see if they will provide additional information.  Also, both myself, and a friend in Russia, are unable to properly view the biographical dictionary site.  Is a special program required??

Yes, some plug-in. Isn't it prompted for when you open the page?
