she was worn out and quite slim at that time - it was just after her beloved father's death. And after Serge's creation of Gouvenor General of Moscou the year before even Ella had to fulfill several additional duties I am sure. Plus: since 1891 she had to take care for Grand Duke Pawel's little children - then aged 2 and 1. She was unexperienced in caring for children and also had severe trials to face in addition to the Grand Duke's morganatic marriage.....

So it seems quite ok if her looks are not the most enthusiastical :)

To me she doesn't look tired or bored, just a sad but lovely expression of the face. I don't think you expected her smiling as CHE-EESE.

Yes....Ella and her mother Alice had that sad expression in a lot of photos. Alicky looked more pissed than sad, while VMH looked bewildered in photos of her.

It was labelled at the time it was published in the 1890s as Ella.

In the Damstadt palace guidebook it was listed as Alix as in some other German publication. It is really Ella of course.

She looks very much like Alexandra in this painting, I've never seen it. It's beautiful and more
beautiful Ella's expression ;-)
