The answer is... it is Elizabeth I!

The portrait itself has her name on it, so there is no possiblity of misidentification. Also, if you look at her facial features carefully, you will see that they are indeed Elizabeth's. I think it's the style of the clothes and the hairstyle that threw us off!

Shocked Shocked Shocked When was this painted? Because if it was before 1558 we may be sure that Elizabeth actually looked like this - the portraits of her during her reign cannot be trusted since she destroyed any she disliked.

According to the book, it is: "Queen Elizabeth, 1559, attributed to Hans Huys".

It does look like Elizabeth though, particularly the forehead. Is it one of those wood carving or wood panel thingeys rather than a portrait Huh

Yes, her face features has similarities with those of Elizabeth, but I wouldn't have guessed it!

Yes, I wouldn't have either, but once I knew that it was Elizabeth, I could see the similarities in the features. This is why I thought it was an interesting portrait.

Now time for one more "mystery woman". This one is tougher... Can anyone identify her?

I don't suppose it's Frances Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk, or maybe Lady Margaret Douglas? Just idle guesses . . .

Margaret Tudor,  Mary Rose Tudor, OR  Mary I?

Frances Brandon? I don't think it can be Margaret because the style of headress is wrong, I think, and this is a Holbein, and she was in Scotland, no?  If it is Mary Dowager Queen of France, then she did lose her looks a bit in later life. But I suppose being married to Charles Brandon would do that to a woman . . .

It looks more like Mary I to me.  Could be Frances Brandon, but it looks like Mary I to me.
