Elisa, actually, I don't know where is hanging the portrait of Alice! Maybe in Windsor Castle or somewhere like that?

Lisa, you really spoil us. Thank you so much for the picture of the Duchess of Kent as I have never seen that one before.   As I have said elsewhere - boring I hear you say - I was fortunate enough to see the exhibition of Winterhalter's paintings when they were shown at the National Portrait Gallery in London some years ago.  I can't describe how truly sublime they are in real life, not to mention huge.
I particularly love the portrait of Marie Alexandrovna; her understated toilette, the entwined ropes of pearls (real I imagine), her delicate and sensitive face that gives us a hint of her physical delicacy and an air of tristesse - I think that Winterhalter really caught the essence of the Empress with this portrait.

Lisa, may I ask you  if all these images are from the same publication?
I have never seen the pictures of Maria Nicolaievna or Countess Lamsdorf; they were not in the exhibition that I saw some years ago and are not featured in the publication that accompanied it.
It's good to know that there are so many other admirers of Winterhalter out there as art critics can sometimes be rather dismissive of his work sometimes.  Personally, I wish that I could paint like that and from a fashion point of view, he is utterly invaluable to those of us that are sometimes obliged to recreate the toilettes of the 1860's, which due to the fragile nature of the fabrics used are very rare amongst costume collections.

Dear Martyn,
all this pics are came from the web!!! I think that Maria Nico. is keeping in the Hermitage, but I'm not sure... I agree with you: Winterhalter is a great technician! It's a delight for the costume-fans! (us!... ;))
