Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar and his family

Does anybody know why the marriage between princess Sophie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and prince Friedrich Günther of Schwarzburg was annulled so quickly? They married 7th of March 1938 and the marriage was annulled the same year, on November 1.

I'm just curious, I'm not in search of a scandal or anything like that. Neither of them remarried, and when Friedrich Günther died in 1971 the princely house of Schwarzburg became extinct in the male line.

all sorts of possibilities.  Friedrich Gunther may have been gay - but Sophie's politics also may have played a role .. she was an unapolegetic supporter of Adolf Hitler.

Thank you for the info, Mrs. Koenig. I didn't know Sophie was a Nazi supporter. If Friedrich Günther wasn't, I can imagine that her support for the disgusting Nazi regime strained the marriage and put it to a quick end.

By the way, does anyone have any pictures of Sophie or Friedrich Günther? I have only seen pictures of Sophie as a little girl and none at all of Friedrich Günther. Anything will be appreciated.

This is a picture of Karoline princess Reuss, first wife of Wilhelm Ernst, grandduke of Sachsen Weimar Eisenach. I believe I read somewhere on this board that it was supposed that she died so young out of misery for her unhappy married life and unloving husband.

Feodora (nee Princess of Saxe-Meiningen)1890-1972 was the second wife & widow of the last reigning Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.Does anyone know of the families flight from the Eastern sector,of her later life & if they saved the celebrated family gems?....Thanks in advance

There was a newspaper blip in May 31, 1947 which stated that the US Army HQ in Germany reported that they'd seized $1,000,000 of jewelry belonging to to the house of SWE 'which had been smuggled out of the Russian Zone of occupation' by a man who was ostensibly going to return them to the family. The jewels were being held until it could be ascertained whether the man was honest in his assertions. It seemed he was stopped at least once before by German police smuggling automobiles out. I couldn't find any follow-up though.

This man never was an Heir to the Dutch Throne.He might have thought he had a change while Queen Wilhelmina had miscarriages and later on "just" one daughter etc etc,but he never ever was an heir,a wannabee,yes,but "The Hague" would most certainly have prevented anything in that direction.And thank goodness for that.

Who would have been the Dutch heir between 1890 when Wihelmina suceeded to the throne and 1909 when Juliana was born?  Looking at one family tree it looks like Princess Marie (md. to Wilhelm of Weid), dau. of Prince Frederick (son of Willem I).  Is that correct?
