In the Great War Forums Eastern front section there is a posting where they have a link to the Russian wartime magazine War Notes Voennie Letpis genrogge.ru. It contains quite a few wartime photos of the IF and the captions of the photos are translated roughly into English so you usually know what time period ect at least the photos were taken. Some of these photos i have never seen before. Just thought you would like to know.

terrific find, thanks. A treasure trove of infomation

This was interesting because it showed a photo I had seen of the girls, but not in full like this.

Is that Count Grabbe on the left? I think the cropped version of that photo may be in his book.

I was wondering that. There is a photo in that book of the Tsar, TN and Alexi which could be from the same day.  I have seen the photo of the girls, and I believe AF,  in a 1918 UK publication... and other places but always close cropped to their figures....now I see they are clearly on a battle ship or cruiser of some sort. The other photos of the IF that I saw  are fairly well known...but this on line magazine would provide a wealth of  information about those photos of hospital visits and other trips etc. Seemingly every issue has a report about a IF war work related trip

i think the ship they were on in picture 1697 could be the Battleship "Imperial Catherine" in picture 1658 there is a group picture of them with the officers of this ship which looks like it was taken the same day. this is because it looks like OTMA have the same hats ect on in both pictures. Nicholas did visit the battleship "Imperial Maria" this same day 12 may 1916 so it could possibly that ship as well. I do agree with you blessOTMA it does look like a battleship and i don't think it looks big enough for any of the Black sea fleets crusiers. This looks like it might be a goverment put out publication so you can see why they have so much of the IF in it.

I agree with you - it was taken in May 1916, during the IF's visit to the South of Empire. Nice to see the full version, thanks!

I was thinking that as well...But lacking the name of the ship this resource provides!...thanks again, It's a gold mine generally for anyone wishing to follow the IF movements during the war. Indeed nena, a full version always adds so much! It's like being able to open one's eyes wider!

I love these portrait photos from 1913 of Alix and the girls. But they have fascinated me as well. They seem to have been taken just moments apart and yet the the attitude between them is very diffrent. In the first one , even though Olga looks a bit prideful, she's not unfriendly . The other girls are smiling beautifully , and Alix seems to have a whisper of a smile as well. Then look at the next one...Olga looks furious , as if she could hit someone and the other's  smiles have  disappeared. Marie seems to be feeling her mother's  pulse! ( her heart may suddenly go to 3!)  One has to wonder if something was inadvertently said in the time between the two photographs. Of course the sequence could have gone from stormy to bright...as I say, fascinating

I have seen this photo of the family identified in print as 1915 and even 1916.
But to me, TN is wearing the famous wig, which should make it 1913.
In fact it one of the most false looking photos of the wig....usually  it looks better

( make the photobucket page 200% to get an even better look)

I agree about the date. If it were 1915 or 1915 Maria's hair should be up as well.

Also, IMO, this photo has been photoshopped. The outlines of the IF  -- particularly the empress and the GDss -- are remarkably crisp, which makes me think they've been superimposed on a different background. In this scan you can even see the vague silhouette of a man behind Alix and Anastasia, as though somebody's been poorly erased:

I agree .This would  explain why the wig looks painted. I think they are in the same background, but it indeed has been altered and similarly painted ( for want of a better would) and so the sharp out lines

I second both of you. The wig is... i don't know, it seems a hat, or something strange, but not hair to me. Since i've seen other photos of TN with her wig, and sometimes i thought it was her hair, well, here the looking of it is awful so i think it was retouched.

Yes as often the case, it's been over done when painted. Less is usually more in such matters. It actually looks like a globe sitting on her head!. The real wig ( is that an  oxymoron? : a figure of speech that combines contradictory terms.)   looked better than that.

IMo, it was taken in 1913. Is the pillar standing behind them? Does it suggest that it was taken in autumn, while IF were at Livaida?
